Some scientists believe that genes determine character traits such as shyness or generosity. Do you think this is true? Which elements of your personality do you believe you have inherited? Discuss, mentioning speicific examples .

Modern technology has enabled scientists to study individual genetic profiles, and they have concluded that some aspects of our personality are determined by our genes. Although few people undergo DNA testing, most people can identify ways in which they take after their parents. However, to what extent personality and behaviour are determined by our genes is a difficult question to answer.

In my case, my quick temper is one obvious trait I may have inherited from my father, as we both tend to get angry over minor things. I have often had arguments with friends over trivial matters, although I usually end up apologizing when I calm down.

I cannot have learned this trait by witnessing my father’s behaviour because his work kept him so busy that I rarely saw him when I was young. However, I do not believe that our characters are fixed, and I have made great efforts to contorl my temper, realizing that losing my temper is not helpful.

One element of my character that may have been inherited from my mother is my positive attitude to life. Earlier this year, I took my university entrance examinations, but unfortunately my gradew were not good enough to secure me a place at the school

I wanted. Although I was initially disappointed, I saw it as a temporary setback and soon started thinking up new ideas for studying elsewhere. My mother’s attitude is very similar, but I cannot be sure whether I have inherited a genetic disposition for optimism or whether I am trying to emulate her.

My experience has led me to believe that genes probably have a strong influence on character, but they do not determine who we are. Certain traits may be inherited but upringing also plays a significant role and our personalities evolve throughtout our lives.
