Guidelines for Curriculum Mapping
1. Introduction
Curriculum mapping demonstrates alignments between the goals of a program and the curriculum that
comprises the program. The map documents what is taught, and reveals any gaps between the
curriculum and the program goals.
2. Development



The goals of a program of study are cross-referenced with the courses required to complete the
program. This should include all required courses, and ideally any other points that contribute to
the achievement of the goals of the program that fall outside of the program’s domain such as
General Education courses or personal development requirements. All the objectives for crosslisted courses should be considered when identifying the program goals that a course addresses.
The intersections between the goals of the program and the curriculum are indicated on a grid,
along with the level of engagement with the goal(s). It may also be useful to note points where
assessment evidence can be collected.
Once engagement levels have been discussed and agreed upon, all possible combinations of the
courses that are required to complete the program should be examined to ensure that all goals
are addressed at the desired levels.
3. Sample Curriculum Map: Certificate in Fungal Culture (Fungology Department)
Program Goals: Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:
1. Importance: Demonstrate an understanding of the importance and application of magical and
non-magical fungi, lichens, yeasts and molds in both contemporary and historical contexts.
2. Identification: Describe the major markers used to classify fungi, and use them to identify and
provide written analysis of common and important species.
3. Cultivation: Cultivate common and important species of fungi in both laboratory and field
settings.
