P113/1/1 - 2007 Lewesland Cottage and land
Summary
Lewesland, part of a freehold tenement of the manor of Camois Court, was not recorded in the earlier
court books and rentals. However, in 1799, when the land tax was redeemed, the land was claimed to
be part of a tenement of the manor of Camois Court part of which lay at Barcombe Cross (see
P113/19/3 TA 892). The holdings were both owned by John Cheesman and after his death, in 1836,
they were partitioned. This tenement Old House Land was sold to William Acton, and New House Land
at Barcombe Cross to John Constable (11).
The claimed relationship of the two holdings is difficult to reconcile with the record in the manor court
book but some evidence for the earlier common ownership of the land can be gleaned from the land
tax records. The Rev. Western, who was taxed for the land in 1790, was related to the Shirley family
who are recorded in the court books as the owners of the smaller landholding at Barcombe Cross.
The cottage dates to the late 18th century.
For other land owned by Acton in 1840 see Curd’s Farm P113/1 TA 1149
