Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce of Florida Domestic Trade Roundtable Summit II Ponce, Puerto Rico March 29-30, 2012 Reaching Across the Oceans Four years ago the Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce of Florida initiated its Reaching Across the Oceans trade mission to promote shipping between the ports of Tampa, Florida and Ponce, Puerto Rico. The main purpose of this particular trade route is to connect the consumer markets of Central Florida with the Southern Half of Puerto Rico, and to do so in a productive and cost efficient manner that contributes to the economies of both regions. PRCCF has assumed this responsibility without any government support and it has only sustained its commitment to this specific mission through small donations and sponsored events. PRCCF has been working with the Municipality of Ponce Puerto Rico, the newly formed Port of Ponce Authority, the Port of Tampa, private businesses, organizations, and private citizens. PRCCF has accomplished much in four years and it is the only chamber focused exclusively on domestic trade between Puerto Rico and Florida. PRCCF has been working to mobilize interest in trade between Puerto Rico and Florida, it has sponsored and paid for trade summits, and it has used its resources to travel to Puerto Rico to meet with government officials regarding its mission. PRCCF has also entered into memorandums of understanding with the Municipality of Ponce, the Port of Ponce Authority, and a number of Puerto Rican business organizations. Recognizing the importance of the growing Puerto Rican population in Florida, and the connection between the Puerto Ricans in Florida and on the Island, the Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce of Florida was formed to assist in the development of trade between the two regions. The demographics demonstrating the connection between the regions are powerful: There are approximately 850,000 Puerto Rican living in Florida. Puerto Ricans are the fastest growing Spanish-speaking group in the State. Approximately 350,000 Puerto Ricans reside in either Tampa or Orlando. The group has a median income of more than $40,000 a year. The group has a median age of 32 years, and approximately 80% have high school degrees More than 40% of Puerto Rican households have children younger than 18 years of age More than 40% of Puerto Ricans residing in Florida were born in Puerto Rico. The Puerto Rican population in Central Florida is expected to continue growing, prospering, and assimilating itself into the State and Country, all while maintaining their ties to their place of origin. Our mission at Second Domestic Trade Summit will be to bring together interests in industry, shipping, and government to discuss the opportunities of creating a regular commercial shipping route between Ponce, Puerto Rico and Tampa, Florida that is capable of connecting the trade markets of the southern half of Puerto Rico with Central Florida.
