OBITUARY---Dr. Thomas Kittredge
1818, Oct. 21. Essex Register (Salem):
We have received the afflictive news of the death of the Hon. Thomas Kittredge of Andover, one of the
Councellors of the Mass. Medical Society, and often in the different branches of our Legislature, aged 72.
He was soon distinguished among the members of his family by his great success in Surgical operations,
and in his treatment of such cases of insanity as were committed to him, as well as in the general practice
of physic, in which he was as often consulted as any man in this part of the State. His very agreeable and
mild manners, and his style of life and hospitality, gave every aid to his talents and usefulness; so that as a
citizen, a magistrate, a physician and friend, he had an uncommon share of the public confidence. No
citizen was unable to find the point at which he must discover something to esteem and commend. In a
uniform and pure character, and by his extensive acquaintance, he had acquired a value which few men
have the opportunities to possess from the favorable opinion they can obtain, or from the general belief that
their advice will command all the relief they are to hope from the medical art. The suavity of manners was
never lessened by the flattery he received, and he never was in higher reputation than at the hour of his
death. The nature of his affliction had long given him notice that his malady was at the seat of life, and after
several narrow escapes, without much warning, he left life, when apparently ready for all his usual duties in
it. His death will be felt in Andover, and in the county, and the loss will be that of a friend, a good citizen,
and most useful man.
(The above notice was reprinted in the Salem Gazette of Oct. 23, and in the Independent Chronicle
(Boston) of Oct. 24.)
From the Columbian Centinel, Boston, Oct. 24, 1818:
In Andover, the Hon. Thomas Kittredge, aged 72, the Representative of that town in the General Court,
and one of the Counsellors of the Mass. Medical Society. His fame in successful chirurgical operations, and
treatment of cases of insanity, was extensive and well founded. In political life, he united firmness of principles to great suavity of manners and candour of discussion, and was equally respected for integrity by
political foes and friends.
