Diseases of North American Wildlife - Part 2, 1 credit
The following graduate level course is offered to DVM/MS students who are enrolled in the combined
degree program, during the Fall 2009 term. Students who wish to enroll in this elective course need to
contact the relevant Course Administrator (U. Zieger) and sign a registration form.
Elective courses are entered as Pass/Fail grades in students’ transcripts, and are charged a tuition fee of
US$240.00 per credit.

Course Goal and Objectives
This course will familiarize students with common free-ranging North American wildlife and the
impact of diseases and the environment on their population dynamics. Population enhancement and
control, endangered species awareness and disease interactions with environmental changes will be
addressed in depth. Families of wildlife included in this course (Part 2) are: raccoons, small game
mammals, fur-bearing mammals, rodents, armadillos, beavers, skunks, procupines, game birds, raptors,
water birds, songbirds and nuisance birds.
On completion of this course the student should be able to:
 recognize prinicpal wildlife species of North America
 understand the etiology of the diseases that affect principal wildlife species
 know the importance of interactions between the environment, disease and wildlife population
dynamics
 recognize epizootics and know how to arrive at definitive diagnoses and evaluate the
 potential impact of the disease on the health of man and domestic animals
Evaluation:
This course will be graded Pass/Fail based on a written examination (80%) and active participation
(20%).
