APPLICATION GUIDELINES
Eligibility
The program supports professional and emerging artists with a strong concept of what they
wish to achieve during the residency period and according to the quality of the artist’s work
and professional promise. Australian and international artists are encouraged to apply for
residencies, but funding is not available for international artists.
Application Deadlines
Applications will be considered four times each year based on the following
deadlines
Monday, October 5 (for residencies starting January of the following year).
Monday, January 4
Monday, April 5
Monday July 5
Completed applications must be clearly postmarked by each deadline to be considered.
Results will be notified within 6 weeks of each deadline.
How to apply
A complete set of application materials, including details on all required aspects may be
downloaded. Do not reformat the application form. If you prefer, you can request that the
application materials be mailed to you. To request this, send an e-mail to Simone de Haan at
arts@montsalvat.com.au No application forms will be faxed.
Selection
Montsalvat artists are chosen through a two stage process: initial short listing by staff; and
selection of final candidates by a panel of four, consisting of the Chair (member of the Arts
Advisory Committee), two professional artists and/or academics and the Artistic Manager.

Expenses paid by artists
Living expenses and travel are paid by the artists. There is an initial non refundable
administration fee of $25.
Presentation of artist’s work
The artists are encouraged to share their work with their colleagues and the general public,
but this remains at their discretion.

How to reach the centre
By car and train
Montsalvat is situated in Eltham; 30 minutes by car from Melbourne. It is accessible by both
car and train from the city.
WORK SAMPLE REQUIREMENTS
For applications to be considered, the following work parameters must be met. Work
submitted should support the proposed project and have been completed in the last 3 years.
Film/Video Arts/Performance and Media
 Applicants are to submit 2 different film or video samples on DVD of no longer than
10 minutes, with running times clearly marked.
 Screenwriters should submit one copy of a script and a treatment, along with a visual
sample, if available.
 Recommended formats: DVD, text.
Interdisciplinary Arts
 Applicants must submit full documentation of 2 different projects, the context of
which should be clearly identified.
 If a visual presentation includes text, 4 copies should be submitted.
 Applicants are to submit 2 different work samples on DVD of no longer than 10
minutes, with running times clearly marked.
 Recommended formats: DVD, images (JPEGs, photographs, or photocopies), audio
CD, text.
Literature
 All writers must submit 4 copies of a written sample of a novel or short story
representative of their work and of no more than 20 pages.
 Manuscripts should be single-sided and double-spaced and printed in an easily
readable, 10- or12-point font.
 Whenever possible, a sample of a work-in-progress should be submitted.
 Poets: Submit 6 to 10 poems.
Music Performance
 All performers must submit 3 work samples of no more than 5 minutes each, with
running times clearly marked.
 Performer/composers may submit examples of their own work as part of the
submission.
 Recommended formats: audio CD (and score, if applicable).
Music Composition
 Composers must submit 2 copies of 2 recent scores and a CD recording of each work,
with running times clearly marked.
 Composers who do not use traditional scores should include a note of explanation.
 Recommended formats: audio CD (and score, if applicable).
Theatre
 Playwrights must submit a complete play script.
 Librettists must submit a complete or excerpted score, accompanied by a recording.
 Recommended formats: text, audio CD.
Visual Arts and Sculpture/3DMixed Media
 Artists working in 3d/sculpture/installation may submit up to 5 images to show detail.
 Visual artists should submit 5 digital images (JPEGs) of no larger than 1MB file size.
Note: Please label each piece of documentation in the following format:
“your last name_your first name_#” (example: Banks_Ron_1,2,3, etc.)

Montsalvat accepts professional and emerging artists according to the quality of the artist’s
work and professional promise. It acknowledges artists of all backgrounds and supports arts
practice that can be catered for adequately within the Montsalvat environment.
Application deadline is Monday, October 5 (for residencies starting January of the following
year). Completed applications must be clearly postmarked by the deadline to be considered.
Late applications will not be accepted. Results will be notified by Monday, November 8.
Submission of Materials: Advertisements for residencies will take place in early August each
year. Submissions will be accepted from that date.
