Animal Friendship Foundation Nyíregyháza, Hungary Paca, now in a care-family in Germany Billy found a new home in Graz, Austria With this brochure, the Animal Friendship Foundation (AFF, Állatbarát Alapítvány in Hungarian), Nyíregyháza, Hungary is presenting its work in order to get in touch with foreign organizations for animal protection worldwide. The AFF was established in 1993; it works in the Northern-East Hungarian region, in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County. The main activity of the organization is the operation of an animal shelter, where around 140 dogs, cats and other pets can be hosted until new families are found. The shelter is mostly over-crowded; when an animal leaves for a permanent home, around twenty new animals are waiting for the free place. Another priority program of the AFF is to rescue injured and ill animals, nurse and cure them thereafter. The foundation owns a utility van that can be used for animal and material transportation; it rescues smaller and bigger pets in need 24/7 from the entire county. The shelter tries to find new families for its residents in several ways; such as printed in local press and online per facebook, the AFF’s website or internet advertisements, email or telephone mediations. Almost a thousand pets were given to attentive, loving homes in 2010. The AFF also operates a webpage and an office for the protection of animals where people can ask in person or on phone and a shelter staff or veterinary answers their queries. The activities of the foundation is open for everybody interested, few thousand inquiries are handled annually. Schools from the city and the county often bring student groups to the shelter to get theoretical and practical information and experience on animal keeping and protecting. Many of these kids come back to volunteer after these educational visits. Numerous events and festivals are organized annually. The biggest and most important among them is the so-called “Festival for Animals”, which becomes more and more popular each year; it attracted a few thousand visitors in 2010. By now the festival also serves as a significant gathering for animal lovers in the whole area. Another event is the “Give an Object for the Animals”, where people donate used books, small gifts they no longer need and the AFF sells them at the Christmas Fair in the center of Nyíregyháza. The collected money is used for feeding and curing the residents of the shelter. Each year the “Christmas of the Animals” is organized at the shelter, where a Christmas tree is set up and decorated together with staff and visitors who also bring little presents for the pets. The guests are entertained with programs and shows about dogs. Other projects of the FAA include the Neutering Campaign run together by the City Council and the Veterinary Chamber and street promotions on the Day for the Protection of Laboratory Animals and on the Day of Animals. The FAA also cooperates and organizes joint programs with other NGOs and city councils. The foundation is interested in joint ventures or generating other connections with foreign organizations for animal protection.
