Fall 2002 - Society of Toxicology

advertisement
A Message from the Student
Advisory Committee (SAC)
Greetings! The Student Advisory
Committee has decided to publish a student
e-mail newsletter periodically. The purpose
of this newsletter is to give all graduate and
post-doc students the most current
information in the Society of Toxicology. In
the last couple years, the SAC has received a
great deal of feedback from students stating
that they were unaware of many activities
that occurred during the annual meetings
and their local regional chapters.
With this in mind, this newsletter will
include information regarding annual
meetings, regional chapters, and the SAC in
general. SOT headquarters already sends
out announcements to remind members of
student-related activities, but the intent of
this newsletter is to do more than repeat
these announcements. Not only will the
newsletter broadcast information from SOT
headquarters, but it will also give all
students, regardless of membership or status,
a better overall sense of what is going on in
the SOT and their local chapters.
The SAC hopes the newsletter will serve as
a starting point for students to get more
involved in the SOT, and also serve as a
communication medium for students to
voice their ideas and questions. Enjoy!!
Miyun Tsai-Turton, SAC Chairperson

SAC Announcements
The SAC held a conference call in the
beginning of the August to discuss the many
student events that occurred at the annual
meeting in March. Representatives who are
involved in six SOT committees (Web,
Placement Committee, Education, Women
in Toxicology, Membership, Continuing Ed) gave
updates.
The goal of having SAC representatives on SOT
committees is to give graduate students a voice on
committees at the national level. Udayan Apte
works closely with the Web Committee to improve
the visibility of student information on the site, and
updates the SAC webpage periodically.
Christine Palermo is our new representative on the
Placement Committee. Last year, the Placement
seminar, talking about different career choices after
school, was a very popular one for grad students for
those who were there.
Miyun Tsai-Turton communicates with Education
Committee in various issues such as student award
applications.
Julie Kern is the representative on the Women in
Toxicity Committee, which supports women in this
field.
Jim Luyendyk communicates with Membership
Committee with regards to membership application
processes as well as student recruitment and
retention issues.
Amy Wang works with Continuing Education
Committee in issues such as topic choices for
Continuing Education courses that might be more
appealing to students.
The SAC has also started to plan next year’s studentrelated events such as the Student Mixer and Lunch
with an Expert at the annual meeting. If you
participated in last year’s Lunch with an Expert,
please fill out the survey provided under the Student
Services Section on official SOT website. We will
provide more details about these events later in our
next newsletter. Stay tuned!
Extra! Extra!
Do you know undergraduates who would be
good candidates for graduate school and are
members of a group under-represented in the
sciences? The Subcommittee for Minority
Initiatives has an Undergraduate Education
program which includes travel funds and a
special program for the SOT annual meeting
in Salt Lake City. If you know any
undergraduates that may qualify, please
direct them to the application for the SOT
Undergraduate program at
http://www.toxicology.org/MemberServices/

Deadline is October 9
