Related Section of pack: Geography and History
Aim:
to find places on a map of Scotland; to describe location of places by using
directions.
Language Points: Directions (north, north-west etc), sentences including
directions (e.g. Glasgow is west of Edinburgh.)
Materials:
Map worksheet, city names on cards, directions worksheet

Preparation:
Photocopy worksheet and cut up cards
In Class:
1) Elicit cities in Scotland, give map out to pairs and have students fill in what they
know. Give city names out to students on cards to help with spellings and names.

2) Students can answer questions below the map. Check answers and vocabulary
(capital, nearest, north, sea)

3) Elicit any directions students know. Give directions sheet and have students fill
in gaps.
4) Show students example sentence using directions. Students complete gap-fill
sentences by using map.
5) Practise the directions by dictating fictional sentences with directions. (E.g.
“Dundee is south-west of Edinburgh.”) In pairs, the students place the city name
cards on the table to show the correct location.
6) Have students write their own sentences about Scotland using directions. Students
read out in groups to check they are correct.

Variation:
Same activity could be used with less support. More emphasis could be
put on students writing own sentences or students creating their own gapfill quiz in groups.
If students are familiar with their own countries or the teacher can provide
maps of their countries or world maps, the students can write about their
own town/city/village/country.
