Provides apprentice level training for military and selected civilian
students in the techniques of military geographic analysis required to
produce military geographic information and documentation (MGID).
Emphasis is placed on gathering and extracting military features
significant data on both natural and man-made terrain features. These
include obstacles, slope, hydrology, vegetation, roads, bridges,
tunnels, and industrial facilities. On-site collection and other
collateral data sources are used. Instruction includes methods and
skills needed to compile and prepare terrain factor overlays from
extracted data. Factor overlays will be used to prepare terrain products
for the tactical commander.

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to perform
basic cartographic tasks in several areas, including map interpretation
and tracing of map overlays, base map preparation in UTM and graduate
grids, geodetic control, construction of photo mosaics and use of the
zoom transfer scopes, map compilation focusing on hyposmetry and
planimetric features, recompilation of one map from several (at a new
scale), and color separation.
This course is taught through lectures and laboratory exercises with
some practical application. A solid approach to cartography includes
drafting, type stick-up, registration, flop separation, scribing line
work, area masks, and map proofing. Course also includes heavy reliance
on aerial photography and zoom transfer scope maintenance.

will be able to manage a large production operation. For Army and Marine
Corps students there is an added emphasis on cartography, reproduction
of maps and charts, and operations management of map production.
The course involves lecture, hands-on applications, field trips, and
demonstration projects including geodesy, map reading, remote sensing,
surveying, GIS technology, and terrain analysis. Instruction includes
lectures, laboratory, and practical experiences in geodesy and error
theory, photogrammetry and remote sensing, basic surveying, terrain
