Pelvic floor disorders can present in varying ways such as stress urinary incontinence, urgency, urge incontinence, bowel dysfunction, prolapse and chronic pelvic pain. The onset of pelvic floor dysfunction is rarely the result of one single event, but more often stems from a whole range of different issues in a patients life. Such factors could include childbirth, chronic straining, habitual postural changes as well as central neurological mechanisms present in chronic pelvic pain. You will learn about assessment and the treatment of the pelvic floor using fellow clinicians as models under the guidance of the course tutors. You will learn to recognise a movement dysfunction of the pelvic floor, be taught the manual therapy techniques to change the dysfunction and learn to facilitate the correct movement patterns to restore normal function. The course also reviews current chronic pain physiology and provides a multidimensional, problem orientated rehabilitation approach with emphasis on evidence based practice where available. Case histories and patient demonstrations will be included throughout. By the end of the course the participant will gain further understanding in: Being confident in the assessment of the pelvic floor anatomy including differentiation of superficial and deep pelvic floor muscles and overlying fascia. Recognising potential disorders of pelvic floor muscle over-activity and applying this to treat bladder and bowel dysfunction, prolapse and chronic pelvic pain in men and women. Assessment and advanced manual therapy techniques for the pelvic floor muscles, connective tissue and neural tissue, including the pudendal nerve. A clinically useful, holistic model to illustrate and effectively manage the multi-dimensional aspect of pain, especially the ‘difficult’ cases. The essentials of pain physiology and how to provide appropriate explanation for your patient. Essential home programmes using specific breathing techniques to release the pelvic floor.
