Title: The Operating Characteristics of Prostate-specific Antigen (PSA)
Results from the Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial
Abstract: The Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial (PCPT) of 18,882 men has provided a unique
opportunity to assess the prevalence of biopsy-detectable prostate cancer and the predictive
value of PSA for values < 4.0 ng/ml (previously considered the “normal” range). I will discuss
some of the potential biases in inferring operating characteristics of biomarkers from screening
studies such as for PSA from the PCPT and the statistical algorithm we used to adjust for such
biases in our analyses. I will then summarize what the PCPT has told us about the relationship
between PSA, other risk factors and prostate cancer.

*** SRCOS/ASA Summer Research Conference ***
The Southern Regional Council on Statistics (SRCOS) together with the American Statistical
Association is hosting the Summer Research Conference (SRC) in Statistics to be held June 4-7,
2006, in Kerrville, Texas. The program chairs for the 2006 Summer Research Conference (SRC)
on Statistics are Dr. Jack Tubbs, Department of Statistical Science, Baylor University, and Dr.
Jiayang Sun, Department of Statistics, Case Western Reserve University. The session topics
include Bayesian Methods in Pharmaceuticals, Adaptive Clinical Designs, Multiple Tests of
Hypotheses, Bioinformatics, Data Confidentiality and Security, and Text and Data Mining. The
tentative principal speakers include Stacy Lindborg, Eli Lilly; Andre Rogatko, Emory University;
Don Berry, M D Anderson; Jeff Hart, Texas A&M; Rudy Guerra, Rice University; Simon Sheather,
Texas A&M; Alan Karr, NISS/SAMSI; and Ed Wegman, George Mason University. Additional
