Sharing Out:
Dr. Shelton asked if there is follow up at each department and school for the Power of One. We want to build an
intentional culture of working together throughout the year. It is important for us to implement the plans that were
submitted. In addition, Dr. Shelton really wants all employees to be happy at work and enjoy their jobs. When we
value and respect each other, that carries over into our work with our students. The Power of One is a way for our
efforts to be systemic and consistent and that is our ultimate goal.
 Food Service: There are 9 schools participating in the Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program. Try-It Tuesday on
September 25 – Quiona (rice item). Many schools have signed up for Alliance for a Healthier Generation. 5
schools were awarded $1,500 to implement a Grab ‘n Go breakfast from Southeast United Dairy Industry
Association’s Fuel Up to Play 60 program. We have received a grant from Action for Healthy Kids/Kellogg’s to
promote the importance of breakfast and implement strategies to make it more accessible for students.
National school lunch week is October 15 - 19 and we will feature two national contest winners: Myka Jackson
from Breckinridge and Lakyaa Washington from Meadowthorpe. Connie Whitaker was featured in Allergic
Living magazine and was one of seven managers chosen nationally as a “School Food Allergy Super Hero.”
 Maxwell: Off to a good start. Looking for 10 character traits that are positive, for example, risk taking. If
children are courageous enough to try to answer a question, we reward them for that. Initiative and selfdirection are also traits that we are looking for. Each child receives a bead for a bracelet.
 Electrical shop is staying busy. Working with the teachers and people at the school on the sustainability
committee.
 Technology: BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) project is going well. The network has stabilized so that’s good!
 Warehouse: Renovations have settled down and we are above water with work orders.
 Operations: We are doing well in operations.
 ACE: has the most supportive staff! It’s a fabulous environment to work in.
 TLC: School is off to a good start. AESOP is going to be great once we all get the hang of it.
 Human Resources: Everything is going well, still hiring and processing people.
 Budget and Staffing: Everything is going well; we’ve got everyone in place after Day 4.
 Financial Services: Everything is going well. Getting ready for open enrollment.

 Overall we have had a very good opening to the school year. The Convocation- Power of One was an awesome
way to start the year and get us refocused on what is truly important.
Issues:
A: Can the idea of school registrars, bookkeepers and school secretaries working 8 hours/day and year
round be considered?
That is something that the comprehensive salary study will look at. We plan to ask the Board to approve the
use of an external company to look into these issues. The company will look at the equity across jobs, pay and
responsibilities. The study will be done and the results will be shared with the staff, the Board and
stakeholders. Any changes or recommendations identified will have to be examined and processes developed
based on financial implications. If the Board approves, a Request for Proposal (RFP) will be submitted and
different companies will be able to submit proposals to complete the work. Once a company is identified; that
company will lead the process in terms of employees to interview, documents to review, etc.
B. Who should clean the cafeteria tables? Students or custodians? Are students allowed to handle
chemicals?
We try to minimize the exposure students have to chemicals. Mary will speak with Operations to come up with a plan on
how to handle the cleaning of cafeteria tables. Each school will have some discretion about how that is handled.
C. Education Interpreters would like to know if their jobs will be looked at in the review of salaries.
Yes, it will be a part of the process described in the response to A, above.
D. Is there any chance in getting the Whopping Cough vaccine this fall?
It was offered last spring, we will check to see if it can be offered at the Benefits fair in October.
The next meeting is October 16, 2012.
