Format and Submission of Qualification Theses
Written qualification theses (hereinafter “qualification theses”) consist of Bachelor’s, Master’s and
state doctoral theses, and doctoral dissertations, in accordance with § 45 Para 3, § 46 Para 3 and
5, § 47 Para 4 of the law.
1. Qualification theses are assigned within the period specified in the Academic Calendar.
Completed theses are submitted to the relevant department of the corresponding institute
on the dates prescribed.
2. The thesis must fulfil all the criteria stipulated by the Study and Examination Regulations
of the university, the faculty and the department. It must also meet all the requirements of
an academic text and be of appropriate length. It must include a copy of the original
project of the thesis, signed and approved by the head of the relevant programme
(placed at the beginning of the thesis, after the contents), and a abstract in a foreign
language (placed at the end of thesis, between the conclusion and the bibliography).
3. The qualification thesis must correspond in its extent and format to the requirements of
UK FSV (see the web site of the FSV library for an example of the required format).
4. The thesis must contain the following signed declarations:
a. That the student wrote the thesis him/herself;
b. That all the sources and literature used have been credited;
c. A statement that the student agrees/disagrees with the archiving of the thesis in
the digital archives of Charles University, and with its being made available to
third parties via the database of electronic university theses of Charles
University, in the form of an "Agreement regarding the Terms of Use of the
Qualification Thesis in Accordance with the Law on Higher Education and the
Law on Copyright" (hereafter the "Agreement“);
d. The extent of the thesis must be no less than:
 Bachelor’s theses: 35 standard pages (63 thousand characters including
spaces), excluding annotations and appendices;
 Master’s theses: 70 standard pages (126 thousand characters including
spaces), excluding annotations and appendices.
5. The student will submit his/her qualification thesis to the department in the prescribed
period (specified in the Academic Calendar) in two different formats:
a. Two printed copies, bound in hardcover;
b. A digital version (identical to the printed version) on CD-ROM, both in the format
of the source document (e.g. in Microsoft Word), and converted into PDF.
Exceptions from this rule may be granted only with the approval of the
administrator of the database of qualification theses. In both cases (source and
PDF), the digital version of the thesis should be presented as a single document
file;
c. Together with the qualification thesis, the student will submit two completed and
signed copies of the "Agreement“.
6. The department, or the institute, will submit the "Agreement“ for signature to the Dean via
the Student Services Office. The Student Services Office will secure the return of one
signed copy of the "Agreement“ to the student and the archiving of the other copy.
7. In the Winter Semester of academic year 2007/2008, the student will submit the signed
“Agreement“ no later than the day stipulated for the defence of the final thesis.
