More Ways to Cook, Nest and Grow
(Boston, MA) Art-of-living expert Katie Brown, whose down-to-earth Midwestern style
and infectious personality have been praised by People, TV Guide and USA Today,
returns with more fun and inexpensive craft and decorating projects in the second
season of Katie Brown Workshop. The 26-part series begins airing on public television
stations nationwide on May 5, 2007 (check local listings).
Katie Brown’s appealing and imaginative approach to the home arts has been a breath
of fresh air for a new generation of homemakers. Katie promotes organization,
imagination and a positive outlook as ways to achieve personal satisfaction. Says Katie,
“Public TV viewers and I are in sync with the desire to approach the daily tasks of living
in an affordable way — with creativity, energy and joy.”
From her real-life workshop in Brooklyn and her Manhattan townhouse, Katie tackles
recipes and projects in each episode’s “Cook,” “Grow” and “Nest” segments.
Accompanied by her fellow workshop experts, Katie demonstrates how to plan the
perfect bridal shower, host a Southern-inspired summer barbecue, capture cherished
memories of beach vacations and prepare homemade sweets for Valentine’s Day.
Always with an eye towards family, Katie provides imaginative suggestions for
entertaining and encouraging little ones. In an episode entitled “Early Earners,” Katie’s
inspires young entrepreneurs to open their own neighborhood lemonade stand with
recipes for different lemonades and frozen berry pops, and tips for fashioning a money
apron and a homemade sign.

Katie approaches her audience as a young housewife and mother who, along with her
viewers, discovers tricks to cooking, gardening and decorating. She is a trusted friend
offering up fast, easy projects and recipes that “are about shortcuts, having fun and
keeping it real and simple.”
During each episode’s “Cook” segment, Katie prepares a variety of simple but elegant
meals, ranging from poached eggs with pesto to beer-simmered bratwurst and tapenade
puff pastries, along with kid-friendly dishes like tacos and peanut butter and jelly
cornbread sandwiches.
In the “Nest” segments, Katie transforms ordinary items into ornate homemade gifts and
household flourishes. This season, she creates tin window planters, a child-size “doodle
desk,” woven serving trays, candelabras, wrapping paper, vases, stylish food baskets,
backyard fountains, invitations, flower arrangements, denim napkins, draperies, slip
covers, coasters, bird feeders and wreaths, among many others. She also shares her
secrets for adding festive accents to a holiday buffet, labeling for organization and
picture-perfect framing.
In the “Grow” segments, Katie works magic with a variety of Mother Nature’s
accessories like herbs, beach sand or eater plants. In the episode entitled “A Natural
Beauty,” Katie roasts nuts and freezes grapes, then creates a beautiful pressed-leaf
collage.
Brown is a TV veteran with frequent guest appearances on Oprah, Good Morning
America, The Today Show, Live with Regis & Kelly and The Tonight Show, as well as
two previous series, Next Door with Katie Brown, currently airing on Lifetime Real
Women, and All Year Round with Katie Brown on A&E. Katie’s syndicated weekly home
arts column appears in local papers across the country. Katie has authored four books:

Live With Regis and Kelly, and three best-selling books – Katie Brown Entertains, Katie
Brown Decorates and Katie Brown’s Weekends: How to Make the Most of Your Two

“Grow”
Out with the Weeds…
It can be an exhausting experience to keep your garden from becoming overgrown with
weeds. You have to carry your tools and you end up with piles of weeds in your yard.
Well you don’t have to any longer!
Materials
8 screw hooks
Bushel basket
Green acrylic paint
2-inch sticker letters
White rope
Tools
Paintbrush
Scissors

Attach screw hooks around the outside of your bushel basket and hang up your
tools. Toss weeds in the basket as you go along

Make the basket chic by stenciling on your name using the sticker letters and
acrylic paint and adding a braided rope handle.
“Nest”
Beach Reflections
Close your eyes…you can hear the sounds of the ocean and feel the sand in between
your toes. You wish you could bottle the smells, the sounds, and the sights of your time
spent near the water. Preserve it all in this very modern and minimal wall décor.
Materials
Frames
Sand
Spray adhesive
Pen
Window mats

Remove the glass from a picture frame and affix sand from a favorite vacation
spot to the frame panel with spray adhesive.

Let dry and shake off the excess sand.

Write the name of the vacation locals as you like
Googly Eyes & Smiles
Fill these bags, then fill the hands of your little party guests with festive and fun favors.
Materials
Pipe cleaners
Paper gift bags
Googly eyes
Tools
Craft glue


Punch pipe cleaners into the sides of regular-size gift bags, bend them into the
shape of butterfly-wings, and glue the ends to the inside of the bags
Give the kids a giggle by adding googly eyes on the bags and attaching a brown
pipe cleaner to the bag handles as antennae
“Cook”
Crab Dip Crostini
Hammering and cracking crabs might appear quite unladylike at your afternoon fete.
Here is the perfect resolution so you can have your crab and eat it, too!
Serves 8-10
Ingredients:
1 baguette, cut into 1 inch thick slices
Olive oil, for brushing
Salt
½ cup cream cheese, room temperature
2 tablespoons mayonnaise
2 tablespoons heavy cream
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
2 green onions, chopped
½ cup chopped red bell pepper
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon chopped parsley
2 6-ounce cans jumbo lump crabmeat, drained
1. Preheat broiler to high heat.
2. On a cookie sheet, line up baguette slices. Brush lightly with olive oil and season
with a sprinkling of salt.
3. Place under broiler until golden brown. Flip the slices over and broil until golden
brown. Remove and let cool on a rack.
4. In a large mixing bowl, mix cream cheese, mayonnaise, heavy cream, salt, cayenne
pepper, green onions, red bell pepper, lemon juice, and parsley. Stir to completely
combine. Add in the crabmeat and lightly toss to combine.
5. Spoon onto the toasted baguette slices. Serve immediately.
Lollipop Cupcake Garden
Willy Wonka’s got nothing on these dressed-up-store bought delicacies!
Serves 24
Ingredients:
1 box yellow or chocolate cake mix
1 container chocolate frosting
1 package Oreos, crushed
24 suckers
Mint leaves, for leaf garnish
1. Following the package directions, make cupcakes using the box cake mix and let
cool on a baking rack.
2. Frost the cupcakes and coat with the crushed Oreos.
3. Stick in a sucker and garnish the “root” of the sucker with two mint leaves.
