COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course gives the student in-depth exposure to the technical aspects of a clinical contract lens
practice. Lecture and laboratory experiences emphasize lens verification, patient education and
evaluation.
COURSE COMPETENCIES:
During this course, the student will be expected to:
1. Identify role of optometric/ophthalmic technician in contact lens practice.
1.1 Review contact lens terminology.
1.2 Explain contact lens terminology to patient.
1.3 Observe basic contact lens examination and fitting.
2. Analyze rigid contact lenses (RGP’s).
2.1 Discuss optical principles of RGP’s.
2.2 Review patient instructions and education regarding RGP’s.
2.3 Perform RGP lens verification.
2.4 Apply troubleshooting techniques to assess RGP fitting problems.
2.5 Practice RGP modification techniques.
3. Analyze soft contact lenses.
3.1 Differentiate between hydrogel versus silicone-hydrogel lenses.
3.2 Review patient instructions and education regarding soft contact lenses.
3.3 Identify differences amongst daily wear, flex wear and extended wear schedules.
3.4 Discuss therapeutic contact lens use.
4. Relate how anatomical and physiological characteristics of a patient’s eyes affect contact
lens fitting options.
4.1 Analyze corneal topography usage and results.
4.2 Distinguish amongst spherical, toric and presbyopic contact lens options.
4.3 Examine cosmetic and prosthetic contact lens options.
4.4 Identify ocular complications of contact lens usage.
