Question 1 is about research
1
a)
Explain the things you would need to know before starting to design your product
Current fashions, target markets, where / when item is to be used, colours in relation to theme,
sizes, safety in relation to user, results of market research, where product is to be sold, age etc.
1-2 marks
minimal information with no reasons
3-4 marks
simple explanation with limited reasons
5-6 marks
several points with good reasons
6
b)
Describe two ways in which you could find out what people would like your product to look
like
Survey, questionnaire, making prototypes, doing user tests, looking at existing products
1-2 marks
Name 2 methods
3-4 marks
Brief description/examples of each method
c)
4
Explain how a designer can use research and inspiration when designing
To influence choice of colours, choice of mood/atmosphere, choice of shape, choice of fabricetc.
More marks will be gained for specific examples e.g. use of bright reds and black as these are
colours associated with rock and roll music
3
Note : this question does not ask where a designer gets inspiration from
d)
Describe two ways designers could use ICT to present their ideas to a client
Powerpoint presentation, word processed report with graphs etc., digital photos, 3D modelling,
CAD drawings showing colourways
2
Note : not just CAD drawings
Question 2 is about designing
2
a)
Give two advantages of modifying an existing product when designing your own idea
If a product is already successful you do not have to do the research and development work as
you know it sells
Looking at existing products gives you ideas to start you off
This speeds up the designing process and reduces the costs.
2
b)
Describe two drawbacks of copying an existing design
You might break the copyright law and be sued
You might saturate the market with an idea and yours won’t sell
c)
2
You have been asked to show design ideas for your product.
The design specification says your product must :



Be based on the theme of music
Use appliqué as a decorative technique
Be suitable for industrial production so that it can be made in quantity
In the spaces on the next page draw and label two different design ideas for your product.




Products should be different in shape and design or be 2 totally different products
Name the products
Drawings should fill the box and be easy to understand
Annotate basic detail & do limited colouring in
Marks will be given for :
1-2 marks
3-4 marks
5-6 marks
quality of two different design ideas
6
weak sketches with little detail shown
clear sketch with some detail
clear sketch with good detail and 2 clearly different products
Marks will be given for :
quality of notes and sketches
1-2 marks
very simple annotation much of about obvious detail
3-4 marks
(2x3)
(2x2)
4
more detailed annotation giving details of things that are not obvious in
diagram
d) Choose one of your ideas to develop further. Tick the box below to show which idea
you have chosen
Idea A
Idea B
e) Describe two ways that your design idea could be developed further
Changing, adding, taking away e.g. the fastening, the decoration, seams, edge finishes, colours,
shape, sizes
1-2 marks
2 ways of changing things named
3-4 marks
details and examples
4
f) Use sketches, labels and notes to present a final design for your product. You have this
page and the next one to present your idea.
24
Marks will be awarded for :
 Choice and use of fabric and components
4
At least 2 of each
 Choice of techniques
4
Appropriate choice of techniques for product, all techniques that could be included are
 Appliqué decoration

Theme used as part of design – explanation if inspiration is not clear
 Originality & quality of the design
4
Use of theme in an unusual way, type of idea
 Presentation of the final idea
3
Good use of space, clear diagrams, unusual ideas, all information that could be given is
included






Read where the marks are to be awarded
Use all space provided
Include back, front, side, birds eye views etc. as necessary
Include exploded views to show detail
Don’t spend too long colouring in – scamp lines (band of colour) will do
Annotate detail to explain your ideas
1-6 marks
7-12 marks
13-18 marks
19-24 marks
lacks detail, unimaginative, poor use of space, poor relation to theme
unimaginative, not thought about end use, relates to theme but is weak
sound design relating to theme, some detail, some imagination used
clear, detailed, relates to spec & theme, imaginative
g) Explain why the design idea you have chosen will appeal to your target market
e.g. Fashionable (give example), why the style appeals, why the colour appeals etc.
2
Question 3 is about the fabrics & components you have used
for your prouct
3
a)
Write a fabric specification for the fabric you will use for your product
i)
fibre content
this will depend on the chosen fabric
ii) method of construction
this will depend on the chosen fabric
colour, texture, surface appearance, feel, weight, properties e.g. washability, crease
resistance
6
b) Name two components you will need for your product
e.g. zip, interfacing, buttons, ribbon, lace, piping cord
2
c) Name one fabric finish that would improve the qualities of your chosen fabric
Should relate to chosen fabric and item
e.g. stain resistance, crease resistance (Teflon), flame resistance (Proban)
1 mark
basic name
2 marks
including commercial name and/or additional details
2
d) Explain why this finish might be necessary
Adds value for the consumer and makes product more usable, reduces negative aspects of fabric,
makes product last longer
2
Question 4 is about manufacture of your product
4
a) Use notes and diagrams to explain how to do the appliqué decoration
 Try to do as many diagrams as possible
 Label diagrams to explain details
 Look at the number of marks and try to do around that many stages in your description
Possible nformation to include :
e.g.
Use of interfacing
How to hold down shape ready for machining e.g. bondaweb, tacking, lockstitch
How to stitch shape into place – detail of stitch etc. e.g. close zigzag
Potential quality control points
4
b) Use notes and diagrams to describe how to do one of the seams on the product






Appropriate choice of seam
Try to do as many diagrams as possible
Label diagrams to explain details
Look at the number of marks and try to do around that many stages in your description

d) Describe the information that would be included in a product specification
sizes, techniques, fabrics, components, seams, stitches, target market, performance information
(what it will do, how it should behave in use) e.g. washability, creasing
2
e) Explain why it is important for a manufacturer to use a product specification
It is the link between the designer and the manufacturer
It allows for efficient forward planning
It ensures all items are identical
2
f) Describe how fabric might be cut in industry
Lots of layers are cut through at once
No pins – fabric is sucked onto table by a vacuum
Knives, lasers etc. used (safety gloves will be needed)
Cutting process often controlled by computer

4
h) Explain why a prototype is made in industry
It
It
It
It
It
It
It
tests out your ideas
makes sure things will fit / work
helps you work out how much fabrics / components etc. to order
helps you work out the most efficient way of doing something
helps you plan out mass production e.g. timing, complexity, specialist skills needed
ensures manufacture will be efficient
shows the client what the product might look like
2
Question 5 is about selling the product
5
a) Explain how your product could be displayed in shops to encourage people to buy it
With other items in the range
Next to high visibility areas e.g. till, window
Posters in the store
Special offers
2
b) Textiles products usually have labels on them. Name three things that you might find on a
label on a Textiles product
brand name, size, how to look after the product, fibre content (has to be included by law), any
safety information, bar code
3
c) Describe two ways that your product could impact on the environment
Impact means have an effect on
Answers must relate to chosen product
e.g.
 Cotton
is damaging to the environment e.g. land is over farmed, dangerous pesticides are
used on the plants, lots of water used in production of fabrics.
 Dyeing uses lots of water, waste water can also have chemicals or colours in it which
damages our rivers. Coloured water also blocks out light and kills fish etc.
 Traditional stonewashing on denim uses lots of water and the dirty water that is produced kills
fish as it lets no light through.
 Lots of manmade fibres are made from non renewable raw materials.
 Tencel is made from renewable resources and chemicals used in the production process are
recyclable so this is a good fibre
 Polyester is from a non renewable resource but it can be recycled.
 Fabric product is made out of could be recycled
