Purpose
This unit standard is for people working in the irrigation
industry, and recognises the knowledge and skills required to
carry out irrigation scheduling in a cost effective way for an
agricultural or horticultural property, sports turf, or public
ground.

Definitions
Irrigation event – this is the application of water to a prescribed area over a
prescribed period of time
Seasonal progress – the seasonal management of applying finite water resources

Analyse irrigation site characteristics and conditions.
Range
a minimum of three different site characteristics and conditions should be
recorded.

Evidence requirements
1.1
Identifies relevant site conditions.
Range
soil, crop, moisture levels, evapotranspiration rate.
1.2
Identifies prevailing weather forecast conditions.
1.3
Identifies system and management constraints in relation to site conditions and
in accordance with the Irrigation New Zealand Irrigation Essentials.
Outcome 2
Schedule irrigation events and identify they will impact on the seasonal progress of the
irrigation schedule.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Calculates depth of water to apply for an irrigation event and schedule the event
in accordance with Irrigation New Zealand Irrigation Management.
2.2
Time irrigation scheduling events to reflect best advantage of naturally occurring
seasonal weather patterns in accordance with Irrigation New Zealand Irrigation
Management.
2.3
Carries out irrigation scheduling over a season in accordance with Irrigation
New Zealand Irrigation Management.
Outcome 3
Carry out a cost benefit analysis for applying water during an irrigation event and decide a
course of action.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Calculates the cost of applying water for an irrigation event in accordance with
Irrigation New Zealand Irrigation Management and Irrigation New Zealand
Irrigation Essentials.
3.2
Analyses the benefit of water application to the crop in accordance with the
Irrigation New Zealand Irrigation Management and Irrigation New Zealand
Irrigation Essentials.
3.3
Decides a course of action that reflects the best outcome in relation to the
results of the cost benefit analysis in accordance with Irrigation New Zealand
Irrigation Management and the Irrigation New Zealand Irrigation Essentials.
