City Name: Barcelona Program: Hispanic Studies Course Name: Ancient & Medieval Spanish Art History Level: Intermediate and Advanced OBJECTIVES A journey will be made from prehistory in the Iberian peninsula up to Roman Spain, passing through the most important historical phenomenons that have a place between the Paleolithic and Romanization eras. The students will have time to study the historic periods that we know as prehistory and Ancient times. There will also be a series of visits to the historic sections of Barcelona with the objective of understanding the Roman and Visigothic city. PROGRAM Prehistory: Paleolithic and Neolithic The entrance into history: colonization and the route of the metals, Phoenicians and Greeks, Tartessians, the Carthaginean empire, consequences of colonization Pre-Roman peoples: social organization, economic structure The Romanization of the Iberian peninsula The agony of the Roman Empire: vandals and mastiffs in Spain The Visigoth reign of Tolosa (418-507) Visigoth Spain. The Reign of Toledo: political institutions, law, society, economy and culture The crisis of the Visigoth reign: the erruption of Islam
