Volunteer Role Description
Main role:
This is an exciting opportunity for volunteers to help ‘Kick Cancer Into Touch’ by joining
the team that will be supporting Cancer Research UK throughout the 2013-2014 season.
Ulster Rugby and Cancer Research will be working together to raise
awareness of important health information messages. For
example, did you know that up to half of all cancers could be
prevented by a change in diet and lifestyle?
We also want to make a significant contribution to the life-saving work being carried out
by Cancer Research UK in Northern Ireland. During the season we will be holding up to 4
match day collections and organising up to 4 fundraising events. We need you to help
make these a success.

help beat cancer sooner.
 soak up the atmosphere of an Ulster home game while raising funds during charitable
collections.
 get a unique insight into the world of Ulster rugby and the charity sector and to be a
part of the very first Ulster Rugby Action Team.
Key tasks:
 Working as part of a team at selected home games to facilitate a charitable collection.
 Volunteering at a maximum of 4 fundraising events during the year. These are yet to be
confirmed but some possibilities include a sponsored cycle, a family fun day and an end
of season ball.
 Supporting the committee to organise these events as part of working group.
 Being a champion of the partnership between Ulster Rugby and Cancer Research UK.
 Using your own personal networks to promote our events and our online fundraising
platform.
Time and location:
There will be an induction evening for all Action Team members in October 2013 and the
Ulster Rugby Action Team will remain in place until August 2014 (although there may be
opportunities to remain involved after this).
During that time volunteers will be called upon for 3 or 4 match night collections and 3 or 4
fundraising events (dates to be confirmed).
This role will be based at Ravenhill for the Ulster Rugby home games and various locations
depending on the fundraising event.
Support:
Fiona Hampton, Head of Sales & Marketing will be your Volunteer Manager. Support
during your volunteering activities will be provided by Kerry Spence, Volunteer & Policy
Development Officer.
Team members will be encouraged to support each other through email and regular team
briefings.
Training:
All volunteers will receive IRFU (Ulster Branch) induction training and an induction to
Cancer Research UK.
Expenses and Equipment:
All reasonable expenses will be reimbursed, provided they have been pre-approved by the
Head of Sales & Marketing. Reasonable expenses will be clarified as part of the volunteer
induction training.
Each volunteer will receive an allocation of Ulster Rugby/Cancer Research UK branded kit
to support them to carry out their role.
Experience, skills and qualities:
IRFU (Ulster Branch) feels that in order to be successful in this role, volunteers should
have:
 Commitment to the ethos of IRFU (Ulster Branch) and Cancer Research UK.
 Commitment, enthusiasm and reliability – This role involves participation at up to 4
match night collections and up to 4 fundraising events. Volunteers should display a high
level of enthusiasm and represent Ulster Rugby in a professional manner at all times.
 Ability to work as part of a team – In order to ensure that the match night collections
and fundraising events are successful for everyone involved it is important that all
volunteers demonstrate the ability to work together and to use their initiative.
 Ability to build, develop and maintain effective relationships with other people.
 A friendly and outgoing manner – The Action Team Members will be the ‘face of Ulster
Rugby and Cancer Research UK’ to members of the public and invited guests attending
the matches and fundraising events.
 Experience of events – Ideally Action Team Members will have previous experience of
facilitating, organising or managing events.
 Flexibility – Due to the nature of the role volunteers should be flexible in the time they
are available to volunteer especially at evenings and weekends.
 Access to a mobile phone and email.

Due to the nature of this role all volunteers will be asked to sign a confidentiality
agreement.
Additional information:
It is anticipated that there will be a high level of interest in this volunteer opportunity.
Anyone who expresses an interest will be asked to complete a volunteer registration form
which will form the basis for shortlisting. Everyone who has been shortlisted will be invited
to participate in a selection process to help us to identify the most suitable volunteer(s) for
the opportunity.
