Practice statement to make sure students meet competence demands.

- each semester written exams

- practical skills monitored with portfolio, reports, checklists and record of employment

- practical exams:

* year 1 powerpoint images

* year 2 four observed tasks 3 minutes each

* year 3 four observed tasks 8 minutes each

- final assessments written and practical

- practical assessment by examining board of at least 3 members (one form an international college)

- practical assessment with live animals in realistic work situations (60-90 minutes)

- 12 nurse skill forms

- final practical examination practical and 1 hour oral

- practical examination with live animals and sometimes owners

- assessment done by one internal and one external examiner

Pepas can ensure examiners all trained in assessment techniques and assure external bodies/ stakeholders of the quality of the graduates practical skills.

Hopefully Pepas will make possible to standardize practical exams with live animals and help us to involve more italian veterinarians and nurse to become vet nurse examiners.

Hopefully Pepas will make it possible to use veterinary nurses as external examiners in a larger degree than today.

Hopefully Pepas can be instrumental in educating more vet nurses in the examination process and enable us to have an European exchange of external examiners on a larger scale.

From aug. 2009 a three year Bachelor programme

- 100 weeks of training in vet practice

- practices need to be approved by Trade

Committee

- each student has an individual educational plan made by the practice

- practice statement to insure that student learns all competences and objectives

- 4 year programme (first two years basic animal care)

- practice statement to insure that student learns all competences and objectives

- diploma is awarded after 3 “compentency finals”

- quality is assured by underlying “dossiers of accomplishments” which contains written exams, practical exams, assignments, reports etc.

- competency final consists of a practical component (critical job situation) and an interview by two assessors (one from the school and one external)

Pepas can help setting up the new practical exams

As we will extend and improve our practical exams I think we will get a lot of ideas on how to make examinations and how to standardize them. As we will engage external examiners it will also give us even more opportunities to cooperate with the vet/vet nurse clinicians.
