Pine-Richland School District 702 Warrendale Road Gibsonia, PA 15044 Phone: 724-625-7773 Fax: 724-625-1490 Memo To: Fifth Grade Teachers From: James C. Manley CC: Elementary Principals Date: 2/12/2016 Re: Fifth Grade Parent and Student Program As you may know the school district in partnership with the PTO organizations and the Northern Area Alliance Against Highly Addictive Drugs will be hosting a meeting for fifth grade students and their parents at Richland Elementary School (for Hance and Richland) on March 30 and at Wexford Elementary School on April 6 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The topic will be teenage alcohol and drug abuse. We will have some high school student leaders discuss what has influenced their success. The video “Listen” will be shown which tells the real story of how drugs ruined families and killed teenagers right here in the North Hills. Experts in counseling, law enforcement and preventative programs will be on hand to inform parents where they can turn for help if needed. In my professional opinion, I consider this a must attendance for students and their parents. Although we cannot mandate their attendance, we can highly encourage them to attend. You can help us by encouraging your students to participate. Perhaps giving extra credit for an assignment associated with their attendance would be beneficial. (e.g., Write what they learned from this experience). Any help in this regard would be welcomed. I would encourage you to attend and to learn from the experts who will be presenting at this meeting. Please be informed that your time will count towards Flextime and Act 48. If you attend, you can help us greet the parents and students as they enter the room and help us establish a very positive and caring tone. Substance abuse is the number one health problem in our country. Experts claim that America’s drug crisis is a runaway train and we must work in partnership in keeping our teenagers from jumping on board or being flattened on the tracks. We will begin formulating this partnership at these meetings. Thank you for your help and support. Please let your principal know if you plan to attend. Any additional ideas for encouraging fifth grade students and their parents to attend would be welcomed. 1
