USING RESPONSE TO INTERVENTION (RTI) TO MAKE
BEHAVIOR SUPPORT DECISIONS FOR STUDENTS WITH AUTISM
November 2, 2009 • 9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Four Points by Sheraton, 333 South Service Road, Plainview, NY
11803
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:
Response to Intervention (RTI) refers to a process that emphasizes how well
students respond to differentiation of instruction within a three tier system in the
general education class. The essential components of an RTI approach are: the
provision of scientific, research-based instruction and interventions in general
education; monitoring of student progress in response to the instruction and
interventions; and use of these measures of student progress to shape instruction
and make educational decisions. This workshop will provide an overview of the
RTI model to address various behavior support needs with students with autism
and other moderate to severe disabilities. Workshop presenters, Cynthia
Howroyd, inventor of software-based intervention tool AutismPro and Concetta
Russo, author of RTI: Making it Work, have together developed a comprehensive
model of decision making called the 5 P's. This model provides practical support
to classroom teachers and special educators dealing with the unique behavior
issues of students with autism.
