Introduction
This project is designed as an introduction tool to the land biomes. The project can be teacher
directed, where it is presented during the topic of ecology. The presentation can also be
interactive, driven by the student. The purpose of this project is to educate students about the
climate, location, and the plants and animals that occupy each of the land biomes.
Learners
This project is appropriate for 9-12 grade Living Environment students, but could be used
visually for middle school students.
Resources
Computer, textbook, they may use Internet for more information.
Standards
Individual organisms and species change over time.
Students:


Describe sources of variation in organisms and their structures and relate the
variations to survival.
Describe factors responsible for competition within species and the significance of
that competition.
Organisms maintain a dynamic equilibrium that sustains life.

Students:


Compare the way a variety of living specimens carry out basic life functions and
maintain dynamic equilibrium.
Describe the importance of major nutrients, vitamins, and minerals in maintaining
health and promoting growth and explain the need for a constant input of energy
for living organisms.
Plants and animals depend on each other and their physical environment.
Students:


Describe the flow of energy and matter through food chains and food webs.
Provide evidence that green plant make food and explain the significance of this
process to other organisms.
Process
If the project is teacher directed, it will be used to provide an introduction to the biomes. If the
project is student directed the students will use the information to complete the assignment
below that they will be evaluated on.
Evaluation
The students will be tested on the information, especially because it is directly related to the
curriculum. Immediately following the PowerPoint presentation I have designed an assignment
that has the students use what they have learned from the presentation to complete the
assignment that will be a graded evaluation. The students are expected to choose one of the
biomes and design an organism that is most suitable for that environment and location. They
will be expected to draw the organism and list some of the adaptations the organism has
developed.
