History
Wilsonville's first veterinary clinic was built on the corner of Barber and Boberg as a
predominantly equine hospital in 1973. Ray and Lynn Calkins purchased the small
animal hospital and practice in 1976 when the population of Wilsonville was less than
500 with only one stop sign in town. Barber St. was gravel and a dead end at the railroad
tracks, Boberg was just a dirt road and pheasants occupied the fields around. The clinic
Irish Wolfhound, Niña, wandered the building freely with Tiger the clinic cat. But as the
community grew we needed more space and the equine area was remodeled to develop
the dental area and rework radiology. An additional remodel in 2003 expanded the
reception area and added exam rooms for the new veterinarians.

Services:
Preventive Care
Preventive care involves regular annual examinations, vaccinations and lab work to
detect early health changes. Regular examinations will involve checking heart, lungs,
abdomen, eyes, ears, skin, teeth and body condition. Evaluation on an annual basis is
important so that recommendations or procedures can be made and/or vaccinations
tailored to the individual animal and family. It is an excellent opportunity to discuss any
concerns that you may have and would like to have addressed.
Vaccinations
An important part of initial visits for puppies and kittens. The specific protocol for each
individual may vary and should be discussed with our veterinarians at the annual exam.
Lab Work
Fecal examination for possible zoonotic parasites is recommended on an annual basis.
Blood work for preventive health care or prescription refills may be combined for your
convenience.
Ultrasonography
Ultrasound, like radiology, offers a noninvasive method for evaluation and diagnosis.
Primarily used for abdominal, cardiac and reproductive sonograms. So important in this
clinic, the ultrasound has it's own designated room!
Radiology
Radiology provides a noninvasive method to evaluate and diagnose many conditions.
Obviously necessary for traumatic bone injuries, radiographs are also important for soft
tissue gastrointestinal diagnostics and screening animals for hip and elbow dysplasia
prior to breeding (OFA and PennHIP).
Pharmacy
Our in house pharmacy offers a wide selection of medications for immediate treatment.
For special orders and individually unique prescriptions i.e. allergy medications, Mary is
the go to Wilsonville Veterinary Clinic coordinator. Some medications are best
individually compounded and we are fortunate to have Creative Compounds in
Wilsonville for that service.
Surgery
Surgeries are performed daily and involve a wide variety of procedures, i.e. neutering,
growth removals, c-sections and exploratory surgeries. Some complex procedures are
referred to Dr. Tom VanGundy, a Board Certified Surgeon who offers his services in our
surgical suite for the convenience of our clients.
Reproduction
Reproduction combines many services for evaluating possible breeding animals
(Radiology, Penn Hip/OFA, Laboratory, Thyroid, etc) before the inseminations (natural
and artificial, vaginal, transcervical or surgical). Our in house numerical progesterone lab
results are ready in about an hour and guide decisions for inseminations and cesarean
sections.
Ultrasonography lets us monitor the pregnancy. First vaccines and early puppy care are a
part of the day to day schedules. Cheryl Lopate MS,DVM, DACT, Reproductive
Revolutions is often available for consultation.
Dentistry
Oral health is very important in veterinary medicine and should be evaluated annually at
thephysical examination. Routine dental prophylaxis performed by the qualified staff
includescharting, cleaning and polishing and requires general anesthesia with cardiac
monitoring. Detailed evaluation by our veterinarians may result in radiology, extractions
and/or oral surgery.
Medical Boarding
Patients requiring medication or special needs short of 24 hour emergency care have a
home away from home here at Wilsonville Veterinary Clinic.
Laboratory
In home laboratory equipment has become widely available for many tests and is very
beneficial for initial diagnostic evaluation and/or treatment. For example, our equipment
makes it possible to differentiate intestinal parasites, regulate diabetic patients, determine
kidney function, predict ovulation or follow up specific tests on site. However, it is not
possible to perform all tests in hospital. Outside laboratories form an integral part of
veterinary evaluation and diagnosis. Many tests are performed in the Portland area so our
turn around time is very short. Others may be sent to universities or other laboratories for
specific research or evaluation.
