Revision of the Certificate in Urban Design The revised certificate program substitutes PLAN 1900 in the list of core courses with a new course PLAN 4050 or PLAN 5985. This change provides the certificate students with a better foundation for understanding urban form and design issues. The list of elective courses is also revised to remove PLAN 3021 and PLAN 3051 which are core courses for the BS in Urban and Regional Planning and invariably created a need for course substitution. Four other courses were added to enhance the elective course list. Certificate Program Description The course of study for the certificate enhances the creative, visualization, and graphic abilities required for design and planning professions. Students engage in design projects that deal with streetscapes, urban regeneration, downtown revitalization, historic preservation, public squares, and smart community planning. The certificate program allows students to develop specialized competencies in urban design and prepares them to engage in professional practice in the public sectors. Students gain interdisciplinary knowledge about physical, environmental, aesthetic, and social planning issues that confront contemporary cities. To qualify for admission to the certificate program, students must hold good academic standing and be admitted to an undergraduate degree at East Carolina University. To qualify for the award of the Certificate in Urban Design, students must complete a series of core and elective courses as well as a final project that allows them to integrate all the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the program. Students must maintain a minimum of 3.0 GPA in the certificate courses and finish the certificate program during the course of their undergraduate studies.
