Miss Sarah Hitchcock, 54 years old and employed as a domestic at the home of W. H. Darling in Elkhart, committed suicide sometime during Friday night by throwing herself in the St. Joe river in Elkhart. Her body was found in the stream Saturday morning. Miss Hitchock had no near relatives. Her nearest kin lives in Edwardsburg, Mich., where there is some property in her name. A couple of days ago Miss Hitchcock was found nearly dead from escaping illuminating gas at the Darling residence. It was thought that she was the victim of an accident in not turning off her gas. Not it is realized that she tried to kill herself by asphyziation. The women was bothered with deafness and there seemed to be a growth of some kind in her head, which affected her mind. Nothing was known of her suicide until the body was found floating in the water. She never made any threats to kill herself and did not seem particularly melancholy. 10/5/1905
