There are approximately one dozen birds in the program with three to five birds presented at each show so no two shows are ever alike. While these birds cannot survive in the wild, the Birds of Prey show at Callaway Gardens allow nature’s feathered ambassadors to provide priceless contributions by teaching visitors the importance of preserving our environment. All of the raptors in this Callaway Gardens’ program are presented with the permission of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Each bird has its own story as to why it can no longer survive alone in the wild and therefore is put in a program such as this as a sanctuary. The Birds of Prey shows are presented by expert trainers who spend countless hours training and nurturing these birds. The trust and mutual respect between the birds and trainers is evident in each of their performances. During the show, many of these birds fly freely overhead as they exhibit their natural abilities and behaviors. Callaway Gardens is one of the few places where visitors can regularly experience these creatures at such a close range. This outdoor show thrills visitors by giving them a rare, up-close view of live raptors including hawks, owls, eagles and peregrine falcons, the fastest bird on earth. The falcon has been clocked flying 200 mph. Annually, more than 140,000 guests per year witness the Birds of Prey shows. The goal of this program is for each person to take away a better understanding of the importance of connecting man and nature in a way that benefits both. Birds of Prey shows are in the Discovery Amphitheater near the Virginia Hand Callaway Discovery Center. Nestled in the tall pines on the edge of Mountain Creek Lake, the vista of the Pine Mountain Ridge is spectacular. “Callaway is the most beautiful and unique setting for a Birds of Prey show in all of America,” said Mark Fowler, son of Jim Fowler and co-host of his father’s most recent television project Life in the Wild. Callaway’s Birds of Prey show can be seen daily at 10:30 a.m. ET, 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. most of the year (weather dependent) with the cost of Gardens admission. Callaway Gardens® is in Pine Mountain, Ga., 60 minutes southwest of Atlanta and 30 minutes north of Columbus.
