Society of Physics Students Constitution for The Ohio State University Article I-Name, Purpose, and Non-Discrimination Policy of the Organization Section I- Name: Society of Physics Students at the Ohio State University Section II- Purpose: To promote the professional development of physics students. Section III- Non-Discrimination Policy: This organization and its members shall not discriminate for or against any individual for reason of race, color, creed, religion, national origin, sex, age, sexual orientation, handicap, or veteran status. Article II- Membership: Voting membership is limited to currently enrolled students of the Ohio State University. Voting privilages shall be restricted to SPS members in good standing who are either a) members of the National SPS or b) regularly attend meetings of the OSU chapter of SPS. Others such as faculty, alumni, and honorary members are encouraged to become non-voting associate members. Article III- Organization Leadership: All officers are elected by, and from, the voting membership on an annual basis. Should an officer become ineligible to perform his/her duties a new officer may be elected from the voting membership to serve until the regular annual elections. Section I- President: The President is responsible for organizing official gatherings. The President provides leadership and organization at group meetings. Section II- Vice President: The Vice President is responsible for fulfilling the duties of the President in his/her absence. The Vice President for the Society of Physics Students will be the liason to The Ohio State University chapter of Sigma Pi Sigma. The Vice President is also responsible for assisting the President, Secretary and Treasurer as needed. Section III- Secretary: The Secretary is responsible for keeping the minutes for every meeting. The Secretary facilitates communication between the members using means that may include but are not limited to electronic mail, posters, and web sites. In absence of the President and Vice President, the Secretary is responsible for fulfilling the duties of the President. Section IV- Treasurer: The Treasurer is responsible for keeping accurate records of club funds, including those acquired or spent for acquisition of equipment and educational trips. In the absence of the President, Vice President, and Secretary, the Treasurer is responsible for fulfilling the duties of the President. The Treasurer shall veto any proposal, which would result in a negative balance in the treasury. Article IV- Executive Committee: The executive committee is composed of the President, the Vice President, the Secretary, and the Treasurer. The executive committee is responsible for the acquisition of equipment and facilities. It is also responsible for scheduling activities and events. Article V- Advisor(s): The advisor must be a full-time member of the University faculty or administrative professional staff in the Department of Physics or a co-advisor must be chosen who satisfies these above qualifications. Article VI- Meetings of the Organization: One general meeting of the membership is required each academic term except summer. Article VII- Method of Amending Constitution: Amendments must be proposed in a general meeting and voted upon in a subsequent meeting. In order for an amendment to be passed a three-fourths majority of the voting members (a quorum of at least four being present) is required. Article VIII- Method of Dissolution of the SPS: In the event of dissolution of the club, if any organizational assets exist, a general meeting shall be held to decide their disposition. All voting members shall be notified three weeks in advance of this meeting.
