7 Dec 1799: As Sister Rachel Coombes has moved her residence from us, but is not
received elsewhere and as some difficulties has arose between her and the
church where she resides Bros. Joseph Thomas, Robert Hannah, Jeremiah
Kindale and Thomas Rowell are to settle the matter, to meet at Indian Creek
Church. Ibid.
11 Jan 1800: According to request of Sister Rachel Coombes the church agrees to send
a letter of recommendation to Indian Creek church respecting her. Ibid.
8
Aug 1800: The case of Sister Rachel Coombes talked of Brother Stone lays an
accusation against her for telling and untruth in saying a certain thing and
afterwards denying it. The church postpones the business until she comes forward.
Brother Stone to cite her to attend next meeting. Ibid.
13 Sept 1800: The case of Sister Coombes brought on, she being present. The church
agrees to abide by the judgement of the messengers sent to Indian Creek church.
With reference to our minutes of Dec 7th, 1799, at which times Bros.
Joseph Thomas, Robert Hannah, Jeremiah Kindale and Thomas Rowell was
appointed to go to Indian Creek church to examine into the charges laid against
Rachel Coombes and bring report to the church.
We, the above named Brethren, have been there except Bro. Thomas on
June 14th, 1800. Six charges was laid against Sister Coombes, having carefully
and impartially weighted every circumstance attending the charges; according to
our judgement and best light we could obtain we report as follows:
we look upon it that Rachel Coombes is not guilty in the charges laid against her
excepting two that is one for giving the lie which we look upon to be unbecoming
language for a professor of religion to use, the other one for not returning a certain
letter to the clerk of that church according to her promise.
Sister Rachel Coombes acknowledges her fault in above named faults to
the satisfaction of the church.
Sister Coombes held under suspension for the charge laid against her by
Bro. Stone till the church calls her forward to answer for the same. Ibid.
8 Nov 1800: The case of Sister R. Coombes brought forward but thought proper to
postpone the business till a future day. Ibid.
27 Aug 1801: At a called meeting August 26, 1801 A True Copy. We the undersigned
being called upon by our Brethren of the church at Georges Creek to investigate
an unhappy difference subsisting between Rachel Coombes a member of the
church at Georges Creek and some of our Brethren at Indian Creek, we viewing
the design of our friends in calling on us, was to examine the charges brought
before us against Sister Coombes by the above mentioned Brethren, and that our
judgements in the case should be decisive between her and them. We hope and
can say of a truth that we entered into the business in the fear of our Divine Master
and an ardent desire for peace among the flock of Christ, and hearing a great deal
from both parties and papers and witnesses brought forward, we do find that our
Sister Coombes has from some cause or other at time dropt expressions which in
themselves were imprudent and untender, for which we hope she has and will
acknowledge with grief her folly in this. But it is our candid opinion that our Sister
Coombes is not chargeable with telling any wilful lie in any thing that we heard, but
from a judgement of charity, it has appeared to us she delivered things as she had
received them from others. Given under our hands this 27 Aug 1801. John Corbly,
Samuel Woodbridge, Jonathan Morris, Caleb Trevor. Ibid.
12 Sept 1801: With regard to Sister Coombes the church agrees with and approves of the
judgement of the above Brethren called to assist us, that is Sister Coombes is not
guilty of the charges laid against her, but that she has dropt some imprudent and
untender expressions for which she has acknowledge her fault to the satisfaction
9
of the church.
With respect to the charge laid against her by Bro. Stone 9 Aug 1800, she
acknowledges she might have said what he charged her with through a mistake by
not understanding the question aright, which acknowledgement satisfied Bro.
Stone and the church upon which Sister Coombes is restore to full fellowship.
Ibid."
[There were two undated membership lists - Rachel Coombes was on one
and on the other she was listed as dismissed. On the membership list dated 13
Aug 1815 she was not listed. These minutes were quoted because they show how
the churches acted as petty courts. All kinds of charges were levelled against
members and the matters were settle by appointed committees. Baptist churches
did not usually keep very complete records, except in the discipline area. BJE]

Helen (Rupert) Jones, great-granddaughter of John and Susanna (Ramage) Combs:
“As of January 1966 we know:
John Combs was born in Pennsylvania, one of ten children. We believe he grew up
and was probably married in Pennsylvania.
He was a collier (charcoal burner) by trade.
According to my mother’s recollection (Emma Downing Rupert) John and Suzanna
lived, for a time, near Zanesville, Ohio. And we learned through Irene (Welsh) Meyers
that her grandfather, Jesse Combs who was a son of John and Suzanna, was born in
Licking County, Ohio. Therefore we know at least that John and Suzanna were living in
Licking County, Ohio in 1883. We know that they moved on to Indiana and settled in
Marion County in the area where the town of Ben Davis, Indiana is now. Their daughter
Eliza Letitia was born in Marion County, Indiana.
John owned a large farm within this area known as Ben Davis, Indiana but he lost it
by ‘going security’ on a loan for some friend of his. (It was a common practice in those
days and many people were left, just as John was, to pay off loans. It was still a common
practice when I, Helen (Rupert) Jones, was a child. I well remember my mother being
very worried and ‘upset’ several times because my father would ‘go security’ for friends
and relatives. One time which I remember very well: a barber in Brazil, Indiana, by the
name of Dan Potter came to our house but talked to my father outside. When we saw my
father sign something we just knew he had done it again!!! And he had. As far as I can
recall this was the only one he had to pay off and it was for about $250, in about 1920.
For a long time after that whenever anyone in the family needed a haircut or shave, he
was instructed by my father to go to Pollom’s Barber Shop and wait for Dan Potter. Then
AFTER Dan was through, just say, ‘It’s paid for by W. H. Rupert.’ I was always
embarrassed by having to do this even though Dan Potter always accepted it without a
word.)
Now to get back to John Combs—
After losing this land in Marion County, Indiana he brought his family to Dick Johnson
20
Township, Clay County, Indiana and purchased a 40 acre farm there just south of where
the Peniel Methodist Church now stands. When he and Suzanna were getting old, he
was 72 and she was 70 as I recall the story, he deeded this farm to his daughter, Sarah,
and her husband, Jack Biggs [John Jackson Biggs], and in return they agreed to take
care of John and Suzanna for the rest of their lives.
Jack and Sarah (because Sarah was afraid to disagree with Jack) treated John and
Suzanne quite cruelly, actually almost starving them. They were often sent to bed being
refused any food after the noon meal. In all fairness to Sarah it must be remembered that
the reason she was unable to cope with the situation was because Jack Biggs was a
heavy drinker, a mean and miserly man and she was physically afraid of him.
Finally, after John and Suzanna had been there for a little over a year, Sarah could
stand it no longer. So one day in 1863 while her husband was lying in a drunken stupor,
she saw her brother-in-law, John Stewart Downing, coming down the road. On an
impulse she took advantage of Jack’s stupor and waved a towel at John S. to attract his
attention and motioned for him to be quiet. Then she poured out to John S. the whole
sorry story of Jack’s cruel treatment of her parents and of his terrible temper and of her
fear of him if she interceded.
John Stewart Downing told Sarah to slip back in and get her parents’ clothing packed
up and that he would be back that same day to get them. He hurried home to tell his wife,
Eliza, what he had learned and to help her prepare a place for her parents. That same
day he did go and get the old folks and ‘just let old Jack Biggs keep the 40 acres as long
as the Good Lord lets him live.’ Fortunately, when he got there Jack was still in his stupor
and didn’t realize what was going on.
John Combs and Suzanna spent their remaining years with John S. and Eliza. John
lived for five years and Suzanna for 19.
The above mentioned 40 acres became the property of Ira Ellis Biggs, son of Jack
and Sarah. Ellis was a good and kind man. He lived on this property all of his life and
when he died it passed on to his daughter Gerna (Mrs. Currie Mayfield) who lived there
for many years. It was finally sold outside of the family in about 1940 or 1945 to John
Lynch, a grocer on West Hendrix St. in Brazil.”
[I can not find any evidence of John Combs owning land in Marion County, Indiana.
Also note that John lived with Sarah Devore in 1870. Susanna lived with John S.
Downing’s family. BJE]
Hazel (Rupert) Evans:
“Susanna, Mother said, was a tall and stately woman. She had a black tooth which
the children liked to have her show them. She smoked a small clay pipe. As long as
Mother could remember she had always dressed in black silk and wore a lace cap and sat
in the chimney corner, smoking. Three weeks before she died she suddenly lost her
mental faculties. The first sign was that when she was called to dinner, she went to her
bedroom and crawled under the bed.
Susanna had been brought up a Quaker and she always used the "Thee" and Thou"
as did the Society of Friends.
Hers was the first funeral conducted by Billy Moore's Funeral Parlor, according to
21
Emma (Downing) Rupert, although the records do not show this.
She lived with John S. and Eliza Downing for nineteen years. Due to the crowded
household, the children often had to sleep at the foot of some of the beds. My mother said
that when she was a child, she usually slept, clasping the old woman's feet in her arms to
keep them warm.
Eliza (Combs) Downing always said that since she (Susanna) had heart trouble all
of her life, she was afraid of being buried alive while in a coma. So she didn't want to be
embalmed and didn't want to be buried until the sun rose and set three times, so she
would mortify (turn black), then they'd know that she was for sure dead. Her relatives
honored this wish.”

Eliza Combs was frustrated when she sat down to sew for there was no needle.
She went to town and came home with a packet of needles and declared that from
now on she would always have needles as she was going to hide them. She
did--she stuck them up inside the log house between the logs in the chinking.
Never could she find them again--but she always had needles! One of Emma’s
(Downing-Rupert) sisters said when the log house burned, “There go Mother’s
needles.”
29
Eliza and her husband John S. had a log house with a walk-in fireplace. It took two
men to carry in the back log--they carried it between them into the fireplace, so it
really was a walk-in fireplace.
Helen (Rupert) Jones
[Rupert Evans: The back log was the log that formed the rear of the fire. It
reflected the heat out into the room, and was gradually consumed. A back log
would last maybe two weeks.]

Letter from Diane J. Nichols (Mrs. Norman Nichols) PO Box 68, Mariposa, CA 95338: The
reasons I'm so certain that Nancy Ann Jenkins was Nancy Ann Coombs is
because descendants of Julia Ann (Jenkins) Latta had some old letters from
Custer cousins in Ohio or Indiana to Julia Ann. Unfortunately, the letters have
been lost. However, Nancy Coombs' younger sister, Rachel Coombs, married
Jonathan Custer - so I'm sure that it was their children with whom Julia
corresponded.
Also, I have a photocopy of a letter written by Julia in 1868 to her sister Rachel in
which she states, "I met a second cousin of ours just before left Nebraska last year.
His name was John Combs. He is a grandson of Uncle John Coombs, his father
lives in Illinois." My cousin in Iowa has the original letter. Now, I'm certain that the
Uncle John Combs has to be your John Combs who married Susannah Ramage.
