ABC – nouns, verbs and adjectives Poster – Visuals see below Developed by Dorota Haber-Lehigh This is a great independent lesson/project very suitable for students level 1 and 2. It’s engaging because students can self select vocabulary based on their interests and it’s fun because students are encouraged to illustrate the nouns. It promotes basic researching skills. Function: Describing people, objects, places, etc. Forms: Nouns, verbs, adjectives Vocabulary: Self-selected by students Materials: Poster boards, visual dictionaries, General goals and project description: Time: 1 week approximately 1. Students will learn the order of the English alphabet, and be able to pronounce the letters. 2. Students will expand their vocabulary inclusive of basic nouns, verbs and adjectives. 3. Students will choose a noun, a verb and an adjective for each letter of the alphabet. Example: A: noun- an apple, adjective- artistic, verb- to add. 4. Students will create a poster. Students can choose a format, or see example below. 5. Students will create a visual representation for each noun. 6. Student can present the poster orally. “For A, I chose a(n) ____and ____and ____.” OR “For letter B: I chose a noun- a bee, a verb- to become and an adjective - brilliant.” Options/Ideas 1. Increase difficulty: Students need to select a noun, a verb and an adjective that relate to each other, ex. R: Rooster, rare, run. A rare rooster was seen running through a plaza. 2. Writing: Student can write sentences that combine a noun, a verb and an adjective starting with the same letter, ex. I know that the killer whale is kind. # 1 Ask students to write 10-15 sentences utilizing vocabulary from their poster. # 2 Ask students to write 24 sentences from other students’ posters as a way of expanding their vocabulary base. 3. Oral practice daily: #1 Practice reading and memorizing the alphabet- as a warm up in the beginning of the class. # 2 Practice spelling words, ask, “Spell this for me,” or “How do you spell this?” # 3 Practice asking questions: “What is this?” Model responses: “This is a ______.” # 4 At the end of the class ask students to make one creative sentence and share it with class (or partner) orally or share it with the teacher orally as a ticket out the door.
