BBB4M – Current Events Article Presentation As part of our daily/weekly routine, current events relevant to the course will be discussed in class. Each student will find an interesting article related to International Business and present it to the class. This is an ongoing, rotating assignment that will occur throughout the semester. Article Criteria 1. The article must deal with the global business world. 2. You must be able to relate the article to at least one aspect of the course. 3. The articles must be current (i.e. no older than September 2011) 4. The article must come from a reputable newspaper, magazine or web site. If you have questions about what is considered a reputable source, please consult your teacher. In general, an article from a major media outlet would be considered reputable; however editorials from blogs, or other ‘online’ sources may not be reputable for the purposes of this class. 5. The article should be at least one page in length, so you have enough information to work with to conduct a discussion. 6. You may not present the same article as someone else. Article Presentation 1. You must prepare a precise analysis of the article in your own words. 2. You must hand in your article summary prior to starting your oral report, to ensure you are not reading from it during your presentation. Your summary should include the date of the article, the source, your name, your teacher’s name, and your course code. 3. You may use notes or cue cards to guide your thinking; however, marks will be deducted if you are relying on them too much. Your presentation should be well rehearsed. 4. You must prepare three closing questions for your classmates to answer. These questions should be thought-provoking in nature. The purpose of these presentations is to generate class discussion, so it is important not to use closedended questions that result in “yes” or “no” responses. 5. You must be prepared to answer questions from your audience. 6. Presentations should be between 5 and 10 minutes in length. Evaluation 1. A presentation schedule will be posted in class. If you cannot present on your scheduled date, it is your responsibility to arrange a date switch with another student. Failure to do so will result in a mark of zero. 2. To obtain the maximum grade for your presentation, please consider each of the following points: 1. Use of good oral presentation skills (verbal and non-verbal communication skills, tone of voice, eye contact with students) 2. Having a strong knowledge of the article, the issue(s) related to the article, and business terminology 3. Ability to effectively summarize its content for the class orally 4. Explaining the cause and impact of the article 5. Initiating discussion, having questions prepared for the class to answer/discuss 6. Utilizing visual aids to enhance your presentation Explaining the article in your own words, and relating the article’s content to terms/ideas/theories studied in class 8. Reflecting personally on issues, and making relevant suggestions, for example: 7. “The article affects me personally because…” “I see the effects as negative/positive because…. “ “I predict that this can eventually lead to….” “I feel that the government/company/organization should….” Current Events Article Rubric SKILL/CRITERIA Below Expectations Level 1 Approaches Expectations Level 2 Meets Expectations Level 3 KNOWLEDGE/ Minimal knowledge UNDERSTANDING -Attempts to use Knowledge of Issue business terminology -Includes limited information on topic Partial knowledge Substantial knowledge -Uses business terminology with -Uses business some difficulty (3- terminology 6 errors accurately and permitted) effectively (with 1 -Includes some or 2 errors information on permitted) topic -Includes required information on topic THINKING / INQUIRY Demonstrates limited thought & planning Demonstrates thought & planning -Attempts to summarizes article -Attempts to pick out some main points of article - Limited analysis of importance of topic -Offers 1 personal reflection and/or relevant suggestion based on topic/article -Summarizes article with some difficulty -Summary correctly picks out some main points of article -Analysis of importance of topic -Offers 2 personal reflections and/or relevant Summary and Analysis Demonstrates substantial thought & planning Exceeds Expectations Level 4 Thorough knowledge -Uses business terminology accurately and effectively -Includes solid and substantial information on topic Demonstrates extensive thought & planning -Clearly summarizes -Summarizes article article -Summary -Summary correctly picks correctly picks out main points of out main points article of article -Clearly and - Extensive extensively analysis of analyzes of importance of importance of topic topic -Offers and -Offers and expands upon 3 expands upon 4 COMMUNICATION: Communicates with difficulty Oral Communication -Does not speak clearly or audibly, cannot answer reasonable peer questions, no enthusiasm, significantly over/under required length (under 5 and over 10 minutes), demonstrates no/little confidence suggestions based on topic/article personal reflections and/or relevant suggestions based on topic/article personal reflections and/or relevant suggestions based on topic/article Communicates with some difficulty Clearly communicates Very clearly communicates -Speaks clearly -Speaks and audibly, able somewhat clearly to answer most and audibly, reasonable answers some questions, reasonable peer required length questions, slightly (5-10 minutes), over/under somewhat required length, enthusiastic, little enthusiasm, demonstrates demonstrates confidence some confidence -Speaks very clearly and audibly, able to answer peers questions (reasonable questions), required length (5-10 minutes), enthusiastic, demonstrates confidence Hand this in on the day of your presentation!!!!!
