awarded in 1979

The group comprises The George Medal (with case), Queen Silver Jubilee Medal, and
Campaign Service Medal with Northern Ireland bar. Also album with certificates, press
clippings and letters including from Private Secretary Buckingham Palace, Charles
Gaggeo Commanding Officer, H.M.S Jupiter, Captain Dalton HMS Jupiter, Admiral Sir
James Eberle KCB, Captain Rawlinson RN etc. Leading Seamen The medal was
awarded for his heroic rescue attempts in rough seas of the Bay of Biscay in 1979. He
rescued three men and recovered four bodies after the Greek freighter 'Iris' sank during
force eight gales. At the time Terry, 26 (married with 3 children) was an Able Seaman in
the Devonport-based HMS Jupiter on its way to Gibraltar when it received an SOS signal
to go to the MV Iris. The crew of 28 had abandoned ship without being able to launch
lifeboats and were scattered between large pieces of wreckage in the gale-lashed sea.
Men clinging to the nets were in danger of drowning because every time the ship rolled
they were submerged again. Terry made four consecutive heroic jumps. Following his
brave actions the Royal Naval recommended him for Man of the Year 1979 alongside
such people as J.P.R. Williams, Stephen Hawking, Jimmy Young and Seb Coe.

They have hand stitched decoration and are each numbered '15'. The stockings have
been in the same family for many years and were once owned by a privileged family with
loose connections to the suffragette Pethick-Lawrences and Pankhurst family. They were
discovered when the vendor's grandmother helped clear their house in Berkshire.
