ANGUS CARERS ASSOCIATION THE PRINCESS ROYAL TRUST – ANGUS CARERS CENTRE GENERAL INFORMATION Angus Carers Association: is a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee administered by an elected Board of Directors. Its aims are: to provide and develop services that directly support carers in Angus to publish information on carers issues to raise awareness of carers’ needs in Angus. Angus Carers Centre: was established in November 1996 under the management of Angus Carers Association, and is mainly funded by Angus Council, NHS Tayside and charitable trusts such as the Big Lottery Fund, Comic Relief and Children in Need. A Carer: is a person whose life is in any way restricted by the need to provide care for someone who cannot manage without their help. The reason they cannot manage may be because of age, disability, mental or physical ill health. This includes young people between the ages of 8-18 years. Angus Carers Centre: provides a confidential, impartial and free service to all carers in Angus. Information, advice, and support are provided to carers through one to one contact, peer support groups, social and recreational activities, training and counselling. Angus Carers Centre, in conjunction with carers and their families, participate in the consultation and planning process in relation to carers’ services in Angus. Several specific projects are undertaken including support for those caring for someone affected by substance misuse, or facing major change in the caring experience, carers seeking to return to work and those for whom the caring role has ended. Staff offer each other mutual support and cover for one another during holidays or sickness so a flexible approach is the required method of working. The Princess Royal Trust for Carers (PRTC): which has recently merged with Crossroads Care (in England and Wales) is has now become the Carers Trust, but has retained the PRTC branding in Scotland, is the umbrella organisation to which Angus Carers Centre is networked. The Trust has a network of carer centres throughout the UK to which they provide on-going support services. These include funding for development projects, advice and support on a range of professional issues, monitoring and evaluation to ensure quality standards are maintained. PRTC in Scotland, provide very useful network meetings for various categories of staff for mutual support and shared learning e.g. managers meetings, rural outreach worker meetings, etc. Each Centre has the opportunity to participate in national initiatives organised by PRTC and implemented locally. The PRTC facilitates the Young Carers Alliance which enables training and sharing of best practices among Young Carer Projects. The Angus Scene: is one where the overall area is small enough for close working relationships with individuals in the other voluntary and statutory organisations to be easily attainable. The Centre is well established and respected within Angus and is regularly invited and expected to participate in planning and organising local activities e.g. voluntary sector initiatives, statutory consultations meetings, advisory groups etc. The Carers currently on our mailing list comprise of approximately 1700 adult carers and 200 Young Carers. Some carers are happy to remain on the mailing list receiving their quarterly newsletter, others engage in the variety of support, training and activities organised by the Centre. Others use the Carers Support Worker on an individual basis quite intensively at times of need but less so at other times. Various support groups exist to offer carers the opportunity to meet with others in a similar caring situation. There are four groups meeting monthly for young carers. There is great enthusiasm for developing Angus Carers Centre from within the staff team, the PRTC network, and the Board of Directors. 16 July 2012 Admin/employ/general information – May 2012
