Fractions and Percentages – Classifying Activity
Learning Aim:
The aim of this activity is to be able to identify the different types of
problem you may encounter in a Level 1 or Level 2 Numeracy test.
The two main types of problem for both Fractions and Percentages are
described on the next page.

2-way table

18 problem cards
Task:
1. Shuffle the problem cards
2. One member of the group selects a card.
3. Place your card in one of the 4 sections on the 2-way table.
4. Discuss your decision with the other members of the group,
justifying why you have chosen that section.
5. There is no need to solve the problem at this stage.
6. Now the other members of the group take turns to classify all
the problems in the same way.
7. When all members are agreed that the problems have been
correctly classified, take turns to choose a problem and
solve it.
(You may round off some of the prices.)
