PRESS RELEASE
Experience the Unforgettable Stories of Anne Shirley in
ANNE OF GREEN GABLES
The American Public Television-distributed series ANNE OF GREEN GABLES: A NEW
BEGINNING and ANNE OF GREEN GABLES I (2ND RELEASE) bring Lucy Maud
Montgomery’s classic character of Anne Shirley to life.
The new three-part miniseries ANNE OF GREEN GABLES: A NEW BEGINNING
(releasing November 1, 2010 in HD) is an epic prequel and sequel to the beloved
original trilogy of classic films, boasting an all star cast – including Oscar winner Shirley
MacLaine, Oscar nominee Barbara Hershey and Hannah Endicott-Douglass as the
young Anne Shirley. Written, produced and directed by Emmy-award winning filmmaker,
the new series offers enlightening and unforgettable insights into the creation of one of
fiction’s most extraordinary characters.
Haunted by the death of her mother and lifelong estrangement from her father,
Montgomery created the character of Anne Shirley in response to the loneliness and
isolation she experienced as a child. The new miniseries is based on Montgomery’s
own journey as a writer, as Anne discovers extraordinary revelations about the
childhood who shaped her – including the truth about her parents and the roots of her
brilliant imagination.

EPISODE GUIDE
ANNE OF GREEN GABLES: A NEW BEGINNING
Episode #101
It is 1945 and a 58-eight-year-old Anne (Barbara Hershey) returns to Prince Edward
Island to write a play, as part of the White Sands Hotel’s summer season. The play is a
distraction, to take her mind off the troubled events of a war in which her son Dominic is
missing. The discovery of a secret letter written by Anne’s wayward father, hidden years
before under the floorboards of Green Gables by Marilla Cuthbert (Colleen Dewhurst),
provides a distraction of its own. The baffling letter forces Anne to explain the childhood
stories she made up about being an orphan, in an effort to conceal her past and the
shame she felt about her parents. As Anne struggles to write her play, she delves into
long-buried memories: the accidental death of her mother, a childhood spent in the
County Poorhouse and her eventual escape into the safekeeping of her mother’s best
friend, Louisa (Rachel Blanchard), and her three children.
Episode #102
Anne’s reflections begin as the widowed Louisa and her brood take up residence with
Louisa’s mother-in-law, Amelia Thomas (Shirley MacLaine), a shrewd business-woman
who oversees numerous industries in a maritime company town. She has little patience
for a “stray” child, and forces Anne (Hannah Endicott-Douglas) to live in her stables. In
the end Amelia surrenders to the child’s great charm, hi-jinks and passion.
When the workers in the lumber mill revolt against Amelia, both Anne and her
begrudging benefactor are stunned to discover Anne’s own father is one of the leaders
of the uprising. The child becomes a pawn for her father, who tries to reconnect with her
in hopes of using Anne’s influence in the Thomas household to his advantage.
Episode #103
Catastrophe in the Thomas mill intervenes. Amelia and Anne are torn apart, and Anne
finds herself deserted by both Louisa and her father.
After 40 years of separation Anne decides to respond to the long-lost letter, in hopes
that it may not be too late to reconnect with her mysterious father. Ultimately their
reunion holds as much disappointment as did his disappearance from her childhood.
Despite a shaky start, Anne’s play becomes a stunning critical success. Her distant and
troubled memories yield clever drama but no solutions to the quandaries in her personal
life. All of the bad and good she has experienced have made her easily heart-broken
but they have also given her an uncommon voice. As her son returns from War with his
fiancée and her family gathers around her for the celebration, Anne comprehends just
how extraordinary her life has been. Despite her endless struggle to be accepted, she
has figured out that the more love a person gives in life, the easier it is to find.
EPISODE GUIDE
ANNE OF GREEN GABLES 1 (2nd RELEASE)
Episode 101
When Anne Shirley arrives at the Cuthbert’s farm on Prince Edward Island, called
“Green Gables,” she is a precocious, romantic child, desperate to be loved and highly
sensitive about her red hair and homely looks.
In her own unique headstrong manner, Anne manages to insult the town matriarch,
Rachel Lynde (Patricia Hamilton) in a dispute over her looks; smashes her slate over
Gilbert Blythe’s (Jonathan Crombie) head ... when he calls her “carrots” during her first
day of school; and accidentally dyes her hair green in an effort to turn her red hair black
and salvage her wounded pride.
Marilla Cuthbert is shocked and beside herself to know how she will cope with this
sensitive, headstrong child so desperate to fit in. But shy, gentle Matthew is always
there to defend Anne and hold her up on a pedestal.
Episode 102
It seems Anne is destined to cultivate disaster. She becomes “bosom” friends with
Diana Barry (Schuyler Grant) from across the pond and succeeds in getting Diana
drunk by accidentally serving currant wine instead of raspberry cordial, at a tea party.
Diana’s mother (Rosemary Radcliffe) and the dour townsfolk turn on Marilla for making
the wine in the first place. Hence Anne moves from one mishap to the next as her wild
imagination and far-fetched antics combine to constantly bring trouble onto her
shoulders.
Episode 103
Anne finds her element in the academic world, ultimately, competing neck and neck with
Gilbert Blythe who becomes her arch opponent.
Anne and Gilbert go on to win the highest academic accolades, constantly vying for
honors at every level. Eventually their fierce rivalry turns to secret affection, which
blossoms into love.
Episode 104
Marilla tries to prevent Anne from seeing Gilbert because of an old war between the
Cuthberts and the Blythes. In the end, however, when Matthew dies and Marilla is
forced to sell Green Gables, Gilbert gives up a teaching post in the town so that Anne
can stay at Green Gables and continue to support Marilla.
