USA Junior Olympic Sailing Festival - Area, held last week in City. More than number of
participants area junior sailors raced in number of classes classes for a shot(s) at the USA
Junior Olympic Sailing medal(s) awarded in Area. Part of US SAILING's Youth Development
Program, the Area event was one of 25 USA Junior Olympic Sailing Festivals held nationwide this year. The USA Junior Olympic Sailing Festival, presented by West Marine, helps
young sailing enthusiasts who already have on-the-water experience develop their sailing
skills while having fun on and off the water.
In the regatta's class information, winner dominated the competition in his boat. After a
dismal finish in the first race, winner rebounded to post a string of good finishes putting him
number points ahead of silver medalist second place winner (City, ST). Third place winner
(City, ST) took the bronze.
Designed to foster grassroots participation in sailing among junior sailors, these events are
often the scene of heartening acts of sportsmanship. When 420 contenders Ryan Burger
and Jon Boyd (both San Diego, CA) had difficulties maintaining boat speed with an
inadequate suit of sails on the borrowed boat they were racing, Meredith Lahey and Josh
Fishman (both Tiburon, CA) traded sails with the duo to give them a chance. The act of
sportsmanship earned recognition for Lahey and Fishman, as well as the respect of their
peers.
