Van High School’s WAY OFF BROADWAY presents The Fall Performing Arts Festival Dear Coach: We are happy to invite you to our 12th Annual WAY OFF BROADWAY Fall Performing Arts Festival, “Way Off Broadway!” to be held on Saturday, November 5, at Van High School. The festival will include many schools from this area. The festival will include the following events: prose, dramatic interp, improvisation, poetry interp, humorous interp, vocals, lip sync, readers theatre, audition, storytelling, techie tool test, ensemble acting, prop-costume improvisation, dance, cold audition, poster, costume, set, program, and mask designs. Check out our NEW event, SPARK, in Section C! The entry deadline for the festival will be October 27. Adds and drops may be made through November 2. After that date, schools will be charged as their entry reads. Substitutions may be made the day of the festival. Entry fees shall be $4.00 per individual and $6.50 per team. Fees (which have been the same for the past 11 years) should be paid the day of the festival with checks made out to Van High School Theatre. Breakfast items will be served in the morning. Our “Coaches’ Feast” is already in the planning stages, and as usual, it is a must for coaches. FESTIVAL RULES 1. STUDENTS MAY CROSS-ENTER, but must be noted on entry ballot. 2. No smoking or any form of tobacco will be permitted in our building. Breaking this rule will result in disqualification from the festival. 3. Complaints should be registered with the festival director only. 4. Nothing is to be removed from any classroom at any time during or after the festival. 5. ALL FOOD AND DRINKS, ETC., must remain in the lunchroom area. 6. No one will be allowed in the tabulation room except festival officials. 7. A lounge for judges and directors will be provided. Lunch will be served for JUDGES and COACHES only in the coaches’ lounge at noon. 8. Directors should be prepared to judge in case of an emergency. 9. Design entries should be set up to be judged in the library by 10:00 a.m. 10. Have a great time! FESTIVAL RULES—Page 1 WAY OFF BROADWAY VAN SECTION A PROSE INTERPRETATION – 10 entries per school A. Time Limit: 7 minutes maximum including introduction B. Program may consist of single or multiple selections with a central theme. C. Introductions and transitions SHOULD BE MEMORIZED. D. Manuscripts MUST BE USED. E. Plays and monologues are not acceptable in this category DRAMATIC INTERPRETATION – 10 entries per school A. Time Limit: 10 minutes maximum including introductions B. Each student will interpret a dramatic selection from a published material C. Selection MUST BE MEMORIZED D. Movement is encouraged and acceptable E. Costumes, props, makeup may be used but not a requirement for the performance IMPROVISATION—10 entries per school A. Time Limit: Preparation: 3 minutes, including drawing a topic 5 minutes maximum; no minimum B. This is a TEAM event for TWO or THREE people C. One member from each team will draw three topics, choose one, and return two. No team discussion will be allowed on the draw. D. Performance must have a definite beginning, middle, and end. COLD AUDITION – 10 entries per school (solo event) A. Students will be assigned an appropriate male-female monologue, approximately 2-minutes in length B. Students will be allowed five minutes with the monologue to prep C. Students may mark on manuscripts D. Emphasis will be placed upon characterization and voice. Gestures and movement will be allowed. E. Contestants should state the character, title, and an author as an introduction (these will be on the manuscript). SECTION B POETRY INTERPRETATION – 10 entries per school The rules are the same as for Prose Interpretation except the selection must be Poetry HUMOROUS INTERPRETATION – 10 entries per school The rules are the same as Dramatic Interpretation except the selection must be humorous in nature VOCALS – 10 entries per school (solo or group to three—two or three counts as team entry) A. Tim Limit: 7 minutes maximum including introduction B. Introduction must include: song title, show title, composer, and name of the characters singing the song in the play C. Contestants may choose any published musical D. Contestants MUST PROVIDE own music background and player E. Costumes, props will be allowed F. “Sell” the song PUTTIN ON THE HITS (LIP Sync) - 10 entries per school (solo or group event) A. Each entry will perform to a selection from a Broadway or Off-Broadway musical. B. Memorized intros must include song and show title, composer and name of characters singing C. Recorded music must be used and contestant(s) must provide music and player D. Five minutes maximum time; no minimum E. Costumes are acceptable and encouraged F. One to three contestants per entry (two or more counts as team entry) G. Judging will be based on originality, showmanship, ensemble, and lip sync—sell it!!!!! FESTIVAL RULES – Page 2 WAY OFF BROADWAY VAN SECTION C READERS THEATRE – 10 teams per school (team event) A. Time Limit: 10 minutes maximum including introduction B. This is a group event and may include two to four members C. The selection may be from anything that has been published or is original D. Contestants must use scripts E. Some movement will be allowed, but should be kept to a minimum F. NO costumes, props, or make-up will be allowed AUDITION—10 entries per school (solo event) A. Time Limit: 5 minutes B. The performer is encouraged to reveal as many of his/her theatrical skills as possible within the allotted time. C. Performance from dramatic or humorous literature is encouraged; the playing of a musical instrument, abilities such as juggling, acrobatics, singing—all are encouraged in this event. D. No introduction is required. STORYTELLING—10 entries per school (solo event) A. Time Limit: 7 minutes maximum including introduction B. Each student will present a story acceptable for 4 to 8 year olds C. It may be serious or humorous in nature; may be original D. Costumes, props, makeup may be used. E. Selection must be memorized SPARK IMPROV—10 Entries per school (team event) A. Time Limit: 2-minute prep; 5 minute maximum B. Scenes will be created using the game, SPARK from the interpstore.com C. Team will draw three cards; select one. D. Build the scene with a beginning, middle, and end. E. No props or set pieces of any kind may be used F. Each team must be two performers. SECTIN D ENSEMBLE ACTING – 10 entries per school (team event) A. Time Limit: 10 minutes maximum including introduction B. Presentation must be a cutting from a published play C. Contestants must furnish their own music and player D. It may be serious or humorous in nature E. Must include 2 to 4 characters DANCE—10 entries per school (solo or team event) A. Contestants must perform original choreography to a Broadway or Off-Broadway musical song B. Time Limit: 5 minutes including introduction C. Memorized introduction must include song and show title, name of character(s) performing D. Costumes are acceptable and encouraged E. One to three contestants per entry (two or more constitutes a team entry) F. Recorded music must be used and contestants must provide player G. Judging will be based on originality and showmanship TECHIE TOOL TEST – Ten entries per school A. Technicians will be administered a 50 question test including multiple choice and matching B. Subject matter will be technical devices used in the theatre C. Students have a maximum of 30 minutes to complete the test. D. Each question counts two points: 90-100= superior; 80-89=excellent; 70-=79=good; 69 or below=fair PROP-COSTUME IMPROVISATION – 10 entries per school (team of 2 event) A.Time Limit: 2-minute prep; 5-minute performance B.Students given one prop and one costume C.Costume must define one character; prop, the other D.Create a 5-minute improvisation scene with beginning, middle, end FESTIVAL RULES – Page 3 WAY OFF BROADWAY VAN SET DESIGN—10 entries per school A. Using a 1-inch or l/2-inch scale, construct a model of one scene from any published play B. The model should be in color and to scale C. The set pieces should be secured to the stage floor D. No doll furniture will be permitted E. On a 3 x 5 index card, write the following information: title of the play, author, scene of the designed set, the scale you used, your name and school number (which you will receive the day of the festival) POSTER DESIGN –10 entries per school A. Posters must be at least 12” x 18” and not larger than a full-size poster board B. It must contain the following information: title of play, author, publishing company, time, place, date, group performing, admission C. The design SHOULD SET THE MOOD OF THE PLAY D. No limits to the number of colors. E. Any method may be used to produce this poster. THE DESIGN MUST BE ORIGINAL F. Include your name and school number on the back COSTUME DESIGN—10 entries per school A. A minimum of 5 designs for the same play B. Any medium may be used to design (water color, 3-D, etc) C. Write the title of the play, the author, character of the play that the costume is designed for at the bottom of the design. No constructed design and no material samples are needed D. Include your name and school number PROGRAM DESIGN—10 entries per school A. Program designs should be a 11 X 8 l/2” paper folded in some fashion. B. Program cover should contain the following information: title of play, author, group performing C. On the cover or within the program should be the following: publishing company, time, place, date, admission D. The design SHOULD SET THE MOOD OF THE PLAY E. No limits to the number of colors. F. The design MUST BE ORIGINAL; any medium may be used. G. Include your name and school number on the back MASK CREATION—10 entries per school A. Mask must be an original creation made to life size or larger B. Mask may be made from any medium—be CREATIVE! C. Mask should be made to be worn by an actor, with head straps or other attachment capabilities—mask should be practical, not a wall hanging D. Submit a 3 x 5 index card with a brief explanation of the mask’s uses and a brief explanation of how the mask was made. Card must include name and school # on reverse side.
