Cross-cultural LSP Dictionary for the Humanities:
A New Type of Dictionary

The talk introduces the idea of a new type of terminological
dictionary that is a cross-cultural dictionary. The author argues
that it is the type of a dictionary that can meet the contemporary
requirements for intercultural professional communication in
culture dependent subject fields.
The presenter draws examples from her research on the use of
English terms in the discourse of Russian teachers of English to
pinpoint the fact that linguistic education is one of the most
culture loaded filed. Like other elements of language, ELT terms
have grown out of specific cultural contexts and a high degree of
familiarity with the context is often needed in order to
understand the connotations and even the denotations of a
particular term. Thus the goal of the dictionary is to provide
cultural as well as linguistic information to help Russian
speaking language teachers understand and use correctly foreign
terms used in profession discourse between language teachers
conducted in English. In this presentation, the focus will be on
the decisions involved in writing entries for the dictionary. A
number of different types of entries will be shown, with
explanations of the various elements of each entry.
