POSITION DESCRIPTION POSITION TITLE: DEPARTMENT: DIVISION: RETIREMENT: FLSA: EFFECTIVE DATE: Temporary Turf and Grounds Manager Parks & Recreation Parks None None February 17, 2011 GENERAL PURPOSE Performs semi-skilled and skilled grounds and facility maintenance at the Sports Field complex. Work involves the efficient performance of tasks requiring manual skills of physically demanding nature or special knowledge acquired through on-the-job training or experience. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Reports to the Parks Superintendent. Work is subject to inspection while in progress and upon completion, although at times, employees of this class may work with little supervision in the performance of routine duties. SUPERVISION EXERCISED None. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Note: Important duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following) Field preparation for play, infield/warning track surface maintenance, turf maintenance, irrigation, field lighting, fencing, building maintenance, landscaping, drainage, retaining walls, trash removal, and all aspects and amenities associated with the complex. Repairs park and recreation tables, benches, buildings and facilities: waters and fertilizes lawns, shrubs, flower and plant materials, cultivates trees and shrubs, fertilizes, trims and plants grass, flowers and shrubs, polices park and recreation areas, mows grass, operates chain and hand saws in cutting up tree branches and limbs, cleans shelter and facility restrooms and meeting areas. Uses field and turf maintenance equipment including tractors, mowers, chainsaws, string trimmers, blowers, infield grooming machine, and various other equipment. Performs custodial work as required and assigned, including changing light bulbs and fluorescent tubes; sweeping floors; dumping garbage and replacing trash can liners; cleaning and sanitizing restrooms and replenishing supplies; sweeping; emptying ash cans; cleaning spills; cleaning drinking fountains, tables, walls, fixtures, blinds, light fixtures, etc.; washing windows; cleaning rain gutters; sweeping roofs. Performs other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS a. b. c. d. e. Graduation from HS or equivalent. Six months experience in athletic field and/or grounds maintenance. Must have a valid driver’s license. Must be able to perform duties on weekends, holidays, and split shifts as necessary. Must be able to read, speak and write English fluently. Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities a. Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, methods, materials, and practices used in athletic field and turf construction and maintenance and experience in areas of irrigation and irrigation systems, weed control, fertilization, turf development, turf repair, turf renovation, grass cutting, soil testing, field drainage, landscaping, infield preparation and construction. b. c. d. 2 Working knowledge of the types and uses of common hand tools, materials and standard equipment used in construction, grounds, and facility maintenance work. Working knowledge of the precautions necessary to work safely with and around automotive and related construction and maintenance equipment. Ability to understand and carry out specific oral and written instructions, withstand prolonged exposure to variable weather conditions, perform manual tasks involving physical strength and endurance under variable weather conditions; ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, department personnel and other City employees. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS None TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED Pickup truck; field, lawn and landscaping equipment, including tractors, mowers, infield groomers, chain saw, edgers, weed trimmers, electric motors, pumps, sprinklers, irrigation systems; miscellaneous hand and power tools for turf maintenance, carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, and cement finishing work, etc. PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
