I am writing to ask you to take action on a major health problem affecting many Australians, including those in your electorate.
Chronic wounds affect around 270,000 Australians. Around 60% of sufferers are over 65, and more than 25% of residents in Aged Care Facilitates suffer from chronic wounds.
Without proper treatment, chronic wounds can lead to serious complications such as infections, gangrene and amputation. Poor access to early health care also costs the government a huge amount of money. According to the Australian Wound Management Association, over $160 million could be saved each year if people had access to quality wound care.
Wound care treatments are very expensive. They cost between $30-50 per week. For pensioners
(who are hardest hit by this problem), this cost is prohibitively high, making up 10% of their weekly income.
In the work I do for the St Vincent de Paul Society in your electorate I have seen this problem first hand.

There are a number of things that could be done to improve this situation. They include:

Placing certain bandages on Medicare and the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme

Giving people with healthcare cards to access free or subsided bandages

Giving pensioners free or subsidised bandages
I urge you to take this issue up with the government. Your attention to this major healthcare problem will be greatly valued by the community in the …………… area.
