Company Background
Jersey Shore University Medical Center (JSUMC) is a not-for-profit 502-bed, acute care
hospital located in an attractive coastal resort area. It is one of six hospitals that comprise
the Meridian Health family: Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Ocean Medical
Center, Riverview Medical Center, K. Hovnanian Children's Hospital, Southern Ocean

and tertiary care center and supports a Level II Regional Trauma Center, a Level III
Regional Perinatal Center and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the only open heart surgery
program in the system’s two-county market, and the K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital, the
region’s first and largest state-designated children’s hospital.
This is an exciting time for Jersey Shore University Medical Center. In 2009 the medical

project that added 136 new inpatient beds, the 4-story, 213,000 sf Northwest Pavilion, the
3-story, 109,000 sf Mildred Rosa Diagnostic and Treatment Pavilion, a state-of-the-art
emergency and trauma department center, 6 new surgical suites, a 975 space parking
garage, and a new state-of-the-art central utility plant. The medical center is also
aggressively expanding its academic programs and is an affiliate of the UMDNJ-Robert
Wood Johnson Medical School. The hospital sustains accredited independent residency
programs in internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, pediatrics, and general dentistry;
integrated residencies and fellowships in general surgery, orthopedic surgery, psychiatry,
infectious diseases, neonatology, perinatology, child and adolescent psychiatry, and
endocrinology; and independent fellowships in geriatrics (medicine) and sports medicine
(pediatrics).
Jersey Shore University Medical Center was designated by J.D. Power and Associates as a
Distinguished Hospital for Inpatient Services in 2006 and received the New Jersey
Governor’s Award for Performance Excellence in 2005. In 2010, it was voted “the best”
hospital in Monmouth County by the Asbury Park Press Reader’s Choice Awards. With its
Meridian Partner Hospitals, JSUMC was awarded FORTUNE magazine’s “100 Best
Companies to Work For” in 2010. The system has also been named one of Hospitals and
Health Network’s “100 Most Wired” health care organizations for 10 consecutive years.
The New Jersey Business and Industry Association’s NJ Biz magazine has recognized
Meridian as one of the top ten employers in New Jersey for five consecutive years. In
1
addition, Meridian Health has been honored with the prestigious John M. Eisenberg Award
for Patient Safety and Quality, only the third health care organization in the country to
receive the award. In 1998, Meridian became the first health system in the country in
which all system-owned hospitals achieved Magnet status for nursing excellence. Magnet
status, recognition of outstanding nursing care, is bestowed by the American Nurses
Credentialing Center, the accrediting body of the American Nurses Association.
