The Week of July 30, 2009 President Peter thanked Dave Skromme for the new Rotary banner and acknowledged BBQ committee members Shawn DeLuna, Jeff Lowenstein, Tony Villanueva, Larry Atkinson, Jim Engel, Wally Krone, Rom Vocker, Kitty Lopez and Sheila Canzian. Another thank you was extended to Ron Borelli and his fellow musicians for entertaining at the event. Peter thanked those who worked on the first Saturday (that turned out to be a Tuesday) clean-up in Rotary Grove in Central Park. He passed out "goodies" for the work crew, including sunscreen and Dove liquid soap for sensitive skin (for Mike Peterson). Jeff Lowenstein, Frank Baldanzi and Nick Rogers teamed up to make what could have been a dull subject (The San Mateo Rotary Foundation) great. A beautiful report was put together and handed out by Jeff Lowenstein highlighting the allocation of the funds within the SM Rotary Foundation, what percentage of funds was spent, and where it was spent. Nick Rogers discusses Rotary Foundation Fr. Eric Heinz was recognized for giving his wife tickets to the symphony, ballet and opera for her birthday, even though many circumstances prevented them from actually making the performances. Don Dailey and fellow table members chipped in to pay the President's Club fine that Eric had already offered to pay. Marion Brown was thanked for his work on changing the club foundation's name to: “San Mateo Rotary Foundation" and then recruited into the President's Club as his reward. (Needless to say, no one stepped up to pay Marion's fine!). Bottom line: in spite of a tough economy, our club's finance committee has limited the foundation's losses, cut unnecessary spending and done a great job of conserving our funds, in spite of the worst investment year on record. Dave Bennett followed them, noting that a group is working on creating a legacy program. Dave said club members will be hearing more soon. Lee Osborne gave an update on Rotary Haciendas and Floritas, noting that the projects remain in the black. He thanked the City for its support and investment in the projects and said the group is looking for more property. of over 300 people. Peter thanked the panel with a gold "four way test" coin for each. Our photographer extraordinaire taking a much-needed sundae break! Mark Avelar described the role of Rotary as a benefactor of the San Mateo Library, saying the club donated over $150,000 to the library over two years.
