Foundation Trainees
General Information
This Document describes the Foundation Year training posts for East Lancashire Hospitals
NHS Trust. All posts are for 24 months subject to satisfactory progress and are 6 x 4
month rotations. All tracks include a 4 month placement in primary care during the second
12 months.
The East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust and Primary Care Trusts provide services to the
population of East Lancashire of about 510,000 people. Geographically it covers the
Blackburn, Burnley, Hyndburn, Pendle, Ribble Valley and Rossendale areas.
The posts are based in the Royal Blackburn Hospital and Burnley General Hospital. The
hospitals offer a comprehensive range of in and out-patient services, including in-patient
psychiatry, young disabled facilities and outpatient clinics from a range of visiting
specialities from tertiary referral centres. There are full diagnostic and scanning services,
with both sites fully supported by Postgraduate Medical and Dental facilities, fully equipped
libraries and subsidised staff gyms.
The Trust has undergone a major new review involving relocation of services between the
two hospitals and now includes The Lancashire Women and Newborn Centre which is the
culmination of more than five years’ work and brings together all East Lancashire’s of
Womens and Newborn services in one place, enabling the delivery of the best possible
care. The state-of-the-art building located on the Burnley General Hospital site includes:
• A Central Birth Suite providing hi-tech facilities for complex births
• An alongside midwife-led Birth Centre offering a relaxed environment where healthy
women can go through labour naturally and at their own pace in homely rooms with
ensuite facilities
• A Neonatal Intensive Care Unit caring for premature newborns from across North and
East Lancashire and providing high level care including whole-body cooling treatments for
the most poorly babies,.
• A purpose-built gynaecology unit incorporating separate areas for services such as
oncology, urogynaecology, fertility treatment, and termination of pregnancy.

East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust
Royal Blackburn Hospital
This new build hospital completed in 2006 and is
located approximately 1 mile outside of the town centre.
There is a regular bus service operates past the main
entrance. Acute services are based at this site including
emergency medicine, surgical emergencies, high risk surgery and a helipad. There is an
extensive dining room serving breakfast, lunch and evening meal with specialist diets and
out of hours catered for. There is also a newsagents, hairdressers, cafe, and subsidised
staff gym. In the ‘Learning Centre’ we have a fully equipped library, seminar rooms and a
large auditorium all fitted with visualising equipment. We have a large clinical skills lab
with kitchen and a 3G simman room with a new state of the art doll which can be
programmed to simulate clinical emergencies.
Burnley General Hospital
The large district hospital is situated 2 miles from the town
centre and a regular bus service operates past the main
entrance. Since the mid 1960’s there has been extensive
development and refurbishment – including the new main
entrance ‘Phase Five.’ When current developments are complete elective surgery, maternity,
gynaecology and the neonatal unit is now on this site. There is also a psychiatry department
which specialises in child and adolescent psychiatry and an urgent care centre for minor
injuries. As a Foundation Trainee you will be expected to work on both sites as your rotation
requires you to.
Pendle Community Hospital
An excellent small community hospital which was opened in 1991. Pendle Community
Hospital provides a wide range of services for the population of Pendle.

Feedback from Trainees
When asked about their experience at East Lancashire current trainees to the Trust have
commented….
“The area is deprived but the people make up for it, it would be difficult to find more
helpful, nicer people than those in East Lancs.”
“Good mix of town life & country life.”
“Doesn’t take long to get back to Manchester as the traffic is often going the opposite
way.”
“Surrounded by beautiful countryside.”
“Good training with fixed sessions & well supported.”
“Thorough training & a good student: teacher ratio.”
“A lot of interesting pathology. ‘Normal for East Lancs’ describes the strange pathologies
you will see which you probably wouldn’t elsewhere.”
“You’re encouraged to do a lot of procedures & get a lot of clinical exposure & there’s
never a dull moment. I feel very well prepared for further training as I’ve been stretched &
well supported.”
“Of you are interested in something, make it known & you will probably see something
done about it.”
“The Medical & Dental Education Team are very supportive, approachable & open. They
are always there when you need help & make an effort to learn your name.”
We have also commonly found that 88% of East Lancashire Foundation Trainees have
achieved their first choice of Specialty Training posts.
Teaching
Teaching is held weekly at either the Blackburn or Burnley sites, you will have plenty of
notice of the session and where it is being held. There will be no teaching the day
following any bank holiday. Apart from lecture based teaching we also include group work
and practical sessions such as back-care and ANTT. The educational facilities include two
large lecture theatres, smaller seminar rooms, a skills laboratory, 3G simman room and a
practical training room.
