Is your personal emergency plan a disaster? Your neighbors can help. A natural disaster—wildfire, earthquake or flood— will descend on Topanga, so sayeth the experts. If we organize our neighborhood today, we can all be better prepared to save lives and property when it happens. The Topanga Coalition for Emergency Preparedness (“T-CEP”) runs a very successful program called the Neighborhood Network (“NN”). A NN is a geographically close group of Topangans who agree to share contact information, special skills, resources and communications to help each other during a disaster. There are many NNs scattered across the canyon. They have brought neighbors together, fostered new friendships, created efficient emergency notification systems and generally helped give people greater peace of mind as they face Red Flag days and the prospect of all hell breaking loose in our idyllic but dangerous community.
