Keys to Success in Ms. Bezek’s Algebra 1 Extended Class
2011-2012

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
 Algebra 1 is an introductory course of high school mathematics. Students are encouraged to
understand the abstract development of algebra and to acquire computational skills, which will
enhance problem solving.


Students will study the properties of real numbers, the fundamental operations with real numbers,
the solutions of linear and quadratic equations, the solution of systems of equations and
inequalities, graphs of relations and functions, and problem solving.

Textbook: Algebra 1
PENCIL(S) with an eraser (NO PEN ALLOWED)
All students should have a calculator. I recommend the TI-30X IIS scientific
calculator.
Binder with dividers to organize into the following sections: class notes,
tests/quizzes, homework, and in-class assignments
Loose leaf paper (stored in the binder)
BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS:
1.) Be prepared for class
2.) Respect everyone and their belongings; leave the room in the same condition you found it (or
better)
3.) Keep a positive attitude, have an open mind, and help create a safe, positive learning
environment
4.) Be honest and honorable (do your own work)
5.) All electronics must be OFF and away during the entire class period.
All rules of the Maine West Behavior Code will be enforced in this class.

GRADING: Your grade is a measure of what you know and what you do. Grades will be based on student
performance throughout the entire semester. They will not be separated by Quarter.

The final exam will comprise 20% of the final semester grade.
average comprises the other 80% of the final semester grade.

Tests are 50% of the semester coursework average.

Quizzes are 30% of the semester coursework average.

In-class assignments and projects will be 10% of the semester coursework average.

Homework will be 10% of the semester coursework average.
The semester coursework
The grading scale (in percents) is:
A: 90 – 100%
B: 80 – 89%
C: 70 – 79%
D: 60 – 69%
F: 59 - 0%

HOMEWORK: Success in math comes from practice! The majority of your coursework will be done during
class. However, homework is assigned periodically. All homework must have your name, date, class
period, and the assignment title written at the top in order to be graded. All homework problems must
show work involved to derive the answer and all answers should be circled. Late homework is not
accepted.

TESTS AND QUIZZES:
 All test and quiz problems must show work involved to derive the answer (unless otherwise
instructed). If do only show an answer when work is required, you will not earn the points
allotted for the missing steps. You will only earn one point for the correct answer (0 points if
incorrect).
 Calculators will not be provided for tests and quizzes. If a student forgets/loses their
calculator, the test must be taken without one.
 Students are allowed one re-take for each test (none for quizzes), but they must make
corrections with Ms. Bezek or a Tutor-U math tutor as instructed and turn in the corrected
test. All re-takes must be completed within one week of the original test.

MAKE-UP POLICY: Homework, quizzes, and tests can be made up for authorized absences. No make-up
work will be counted for unauthorized absences. It is the student’s responsibility to talk to me regarding
a time to make up quizzes and tests. Tests and quizzes must be made up within two days of the
absence. When turning in make-up homework for an authorized absence, please make sure the date and
title of the assignment are written at the top.
If you will be absent due to a field trip, you must come see me IN ADVANCE to find out what you will be
missing. If you wait until after the field trip to find out what you missed, the work you turn in will be
considered LATE! A field trip is NOT treated like an excused absence. You are expected to come to the
next class prepared!

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY:
Students are expected to complete all tests and assignments honestly and will not collaborate in
dishonest actions. Students will not give or accept answers or assignments unless directed to by the
teacher. Students caught cheating or plagiarizing will be subject to discipline as stated in the
Behavior Code.

EXTRA HELP:
 I am available for help before school in room B-203 and after school by appointment, unless
there is a scheduled meeting. Please ask.

Help is always available periods 1 through 9 in the Math Tutoring Room, room B-201B.


You and your parents/ guardians are encouraged to check your grade via the Parent Portal on a
regular basis. Grades will be updated within a week of every quiz and test. Extra credit will not be
offered.
