Traineeship Agreement (Draft)
Positive Action Traineeship 18 months work placement
This agreement is to confirm the terms of the Positive Action Traineeship (PAT)
placement between Nottingham Trent University (NTU) and the trainee during
their placement at Leicester City Council.
Context
Through the Positive Action Traineeship NTU aims to contribute towards
ensuring that in the longer-term there are more minority-ethnic people who are
qualified as potential applicants for mid- and senior-level positions in museums.
The Positive Action Traineeship is delivered under section 37 of the Race
Relations Act (1976) with funding from the Museums, Libraries and Archives
Council (MLA) delivered through Renaissance East Midlands.
Recent research by the Museums Association has demonstrated that there are a
number of ethnic groups currently under-represented in the museum sector in
collections and management related positions, including the following: Asian,
Asian British descent (including people from Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi,
Chinese and any other Asian background and Black, Black British descent
(including people from Caribbean, African and any other Black background).
The Positive Action Traineeship scheme forms part of a strategic initiative,
delivered under Section 37 of the Race Relations Act 1976, aimed at reducing
this under-representation through offering a training programme to members of
these under-represented ethnic groups. Therefore, bursaries are open to
applicants of Black-African, Caribbean, Chinese, South Asian or South-East
Asian descent.
Work placement/taught programme
The work placement element of the training programme will be hosted by
Leicester City Council and will run for the duration of the 18 month traineeship.
The trainee will be paid a training bursary in monthly instalments over the 18month duration of the traineeship. Nottingham Trent University will administer
the bursary, expenses and payment of fees. It is our understanding that such
awards are tax-exempt, but the trainee should make enquires with HMRC to
confirm this.
The traineeship will be based at Nottingham Trent University, Clifton Campus
NG11 8NS. Attendance on campus or at site visits during the taught
programme is for a minimum of two days per week and up to two study
weekends during term-time. The work placement will be equivalent to:
Full time working with Leicester City Council from May to September 2010 and
during October 2011; (full time also June-September if on the PGDip
programme).
Part time working for two days each week during term-time, during the
Christmas and Easter breaks and for the period June-September if on the MA
programme.
10
June 2006
Typically, part time work placement will consist of the pro rata hours of 37
hours per week with allowance for lunch consistent with the host’s existing
procedures for working and leave by negotiation within the host’s normal
allowance and statutory holidays. Part time days may vary, taking account of
the university programme, study leave and the host’s programme of work,
including weekend and evening working.
The placement supervisor Bryony Robbins, is the first point of contact at the
host organisation and responsible for briefing and managing the placement.
The supervisor will provide line management, training and guidance during the
work placement at the host organisation. The supervisor is responsible for
negotiating leave, study leave, attendance at any additional training events and
should be notified in the event of sickness absence. The trainee will be expected
to attend the Museums Association annual conferences in October 2010 and
2011 and any other relevant MA events. Expenses subsidy is available for travel
and expenses.
A programme of work will be agreed with the host at the start of the placement,
taking account of the teaching programme of the part time MA/PGDip in
Museum & Heritage Management. Regular review dates with the supervisor
will be built into the programme. The NTU placement tutor will contact and/or
visit the host organisation during the placement to ensure the work programme
is running smoothly and to help identify any additional areas of experience
required that are not outlined in the work programme.
Termination
In the case of voluntary resignation, the traineeship may be terminated at any
time by two weeks’ notice in writing. Nottingham Trent University may also
terminate the placement by two week’s notice in writing. Leicester City Council
may terminate the work placement by two week’s notice in writing.
Placement report
The trainee is required to submit a report on the work placement following the
Easter break 2011 outlining and reflecting on the experience gained at the host
organisation. This is an assessed piece of work. The trainee is also expected to
participate fully in review and evaluation at the end of the traineeship and to
produce a final evaluation report by 1 December 2011.
