JEROME STANISLAWS9 VANDERBURG (Victor8, Louis7, William H.6, Henry , William4, Henry3, Dirck2, Lucas1), son of Victor Vanderburg and Rosalie Marengo, was born on 15 Sep 1891 at Stevensville, MT. At the age of one year he was one of the members of the Indian band that begrudgingly left Stevensville and came to the Jocko Valley in 1891. Chief Charlot was leader of the reluctant members of his tribe when they were forced to leave their hereditary homeland in the Bitterroot Valley. Jerome was a member of the band that defied the government officials for more than 20 years, after Chief Charlot denied he had ever signed a treaty attributed to him by the United States. Subsequent records, and the words of General James Garfield, later President Garfield, verified the claims of Charlot that his signature had been falsified on the original document. Garfield, then Special Commissioner for the removal of the Flathead Indians to the Jocko Valley, admitted that although "Arlee and Adolph, the second and third chiefs signed the contract, ... Charlot refused to sign." Jerome attended the Mission School, conducted by the Jesuit Fathers at St. Ignatius, MT. He served as a trail cutter for the Civilian Conservation Corps, and ranched in the Arlee, MT area for more that 60 years. Jerome, married, first, in 1912 ISABEL WOODCOCK, daughter of Andrew and Mary (______) Woodcock. Isabel was born on 1 Jul 1895 and was a full blooded Pen d’Oreille. She apparently died in childbirth on 7 Jul 1920. Jerome married, second, on 15 Aug 1920 MARY AGNES ADAMS. Agnes was born on 14 Feb 1901 at Valley Creek, Lake Co., MT, the daughter of Eneas Adams and Adele Kaltomee. She attended the Sisters of Charity School at Arlee, Lake Co., MT until stricken with tuberculosis in the sixth grade. Agnes had been married prior to her marriage to Jerome. She first married in 1916 Louie Siwahsah. [Note: Gene Felsman says that Agnes m.(3) C.L. 1920 ______ Matt. But also mentions that she married Jerome in Aug 1920. Then he says the Vanderburg children born 1924 - 1929 are illegimate?]. Jerome and Agnes lived in Arlee, MT and were respected sources of information on Flathead Indian history, and Jerome was known particularly as a musician. He and Agnes, taught Salish Indian music and culture at the University of Montana’s family recreation camps in the Little Prairie area east of Arlee, MT for 12 years, and provided the information for a book on Flathead music written by Allan Merriam. They also sang for a recording of Flathead music in 1958. Jerome died on 25 Jul 1974 at the Holy Family Hospital at St. Ignatius, MT. After a funeral mass in the Jocko Catholic Church, he was buried in the Jocko Cemetery. After his death, Agnes moved the camp to Valley Creek, near the northeast side of Squaw Peak. Since then, she and other family members had spent the warmer months of the year living at the camp while they taught Indian traditions. In 1983, Anges was given special recognition by Montana Governor Ted Schwinden for her many cultural contributions. The following year, she flew to 5 a.
