UNYTE Translational Research Network
The UR-CTSI operates UNYTE to increase the quality and quantity of translational research in
the Upstate New York region through collaborative research and resource sharing. UNYTE
consists of 18 member biomedical research institutions located in Upstate New York from
Albany to Buffalo. UNYTE was created to assist faculty and trainees and improve access to
expertise, technologies, services, and curricula shared among institutions, fostering
collaborative research, reducing resource duplication, and enhancing bidirectional transfer of
information between basic and clinical investigators. If considered as a group, UNYTE member
institutions would rank as the 10th largest NIH-funded institution. Accomplishments include the
development and implementation of a collaborative IRB model, and the implementation of an
online regional research resource database.
Through UNYTE, the UR-CTSI coordinates network-wide Scientific Sessions, bringing together
translational researchers from member institutions for topic-specific conferences to generate
new cross-institutional scientific projects.

UNYTE has the potential to facilitate population-based studies. Through its member institutions,
UNYTE has access to several populations which are understudied, including:

Rural populations, research programs in rural health, and vertically integrated rural
health programs

Deaf and hard of hearing (D/HOH) populations through the National Center for Deaf
Health Research
UNYTE offers a pilot funding program open to investigators at research institutions across the
Upstate region. The objective of the program is to catalyze the formation of multi-institutional,
cross-disciplinary research teams that are focused on a critical issue in clinical or translational
research. To receive funding, projects must involve collaboration from at least two UNYTE
member institutions.
The UNYTE Research Project Database is an on-line, searchable inventory of research projects
that have taken place at UNYTE institutions. The information may help users find collaborators
or mentors across UNYTE via the database’s fast and easy search tools.
